via sata card - dell dvd - dma problem?

We've got a via 6421 sata card and a dell PBDS DVD+RW DH-16W1S sata dvd drive. It seems there's a problem with either the card or the drive or both. We've got windows xp pro sp3. The drive functioned well in the beginning (I think before we updated to sp3.) We updated to the newest drivers for the card (from via) and updated the firmware for the drive. The firmware update gets to 100% but then seems to hang although I was able to exit. When I try to look at the drive properties in the Device Manager, it causes the program to become unresponsive and I have to use "End Task" to exit the Device Manager. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Ultra ATA Controller and made sure that the IDE cable is 80 socket. (The computer is a dell dimension XPS_R 2GHz with 512M ram. The bios DMA option is set to "Auto".

When I try to use Image Burn it hangs at the "writing lead-in". Sometimes it gives the message that there was an I/O error and sometimes that there was a DMA error. The media is CMC MAG AM3 (Staples).

How long is the SATA cable to the drive? Try a new really short one.

Are you being forced to use the Via card?

Do you have no onboard SATA ports?

Can you swap out the card for one that's known to work ok with optical drives? (Silicon Image for example)

Thanks for your help.

As it turns out - I finally tried putting the card in a different computer (another dell dimension but a 4600 series). There was no longer a problem with the card or the dvd drive.

There was a kind of strange problem on the original computer (dimension 2350). It has a 60G wd harddrive and a 20G seagate. The wd is master with the seagate slave. When I tried to connect the wd as a single master, the computer couldn't find it on boot. The computer was able to find the seagate as a single master. I had to put the wd drive back together with the seagate slave before the computer was able to find it, for some reason.

You have to be carefull at jumper settings. Some older hard drives have two jumpers to tell them there is one slave present.

You have to remove the second jumper and let just the master or single. On newer WD no jumper = master or single. Look on the schema.

Maybe you want to try with a new 80 pin data cable.
