Something (software installed and running) is keeping your drive locked.

Unless you have a valid reason, update XP to SP3

Try a lower speed instead of MAX

Probably this firmware is newer, see if it lets you update http://www.firmwarehq.com/Lite-On/SHW-160P6S/files.html Remove any disc from the drive before procede to update.

OK tried the firmware update, and got error response 'No Matched drive detected' that 'this utility only for LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S drive.' vice

my Detected drives; 1-0-0-0 I:LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S PGS1..... whatever PGS1 is I guess???

No,no reason to avoid SP3 I know... just they keep giving me SP2 stuff, and no clue how or why.... I have avoided Vista and the laters, but XP is the old comfortable OS I have learned to live with..... do I somehow request SP3 from MS to get the update... the old shoe could use a shine I guess....

I also see try a slower speed than Max... that's easy, just select during next round I assume.......

but also trying to sort out the 'Volume Lock' issue.. about some other program got its foot in the door on my burner??....

tried dowloading Process Explorer to see who, but don't quite understand who all the players are or how to get a specific look, seems like these other programs maybe have a standing 'process handle' like Media Center, HP Image,??? ......... or is that something ImgBrnr just handled, and blew thru the issue??

OK guess IB didn't unlock/lock.... as that is your first issue... tunnel vision!!!

Nice tetrahedron by the way.......

thanks

You can download SP3 for XP here free.

OK got thru that SP3 install.. machine let out huge belch finally... thanks Pear Sap.... our pears not as sapient as them Tejanos trees......

So what to do next.. doubt we ready to load one up and smoke it just yet....

How do I look at who else has the handle on my drive w/ Process Explorer... do I have to be in an active burn session??... seems like this is a standing condition/state used by others... can I get to that in static condition???... what do I need to look at in Proc Explor...hmmm, that has an odor to it.....

Not sure I have a clean DVD at this point..

And still trying to figure out if that firmware update should work on my old drive.....?? needs some cajoling??

But I'm getting an inkling of what's going on..... keep it up...

gave PrExp a 'Find' CDROM.... and got zero...... (guess that's same as search??)

but I did notice in general screen (pane) view, stuff about DVDRAMSV.exe, that opened to a window was full 'pipes, strings, handles' etc....

is this where I get a 'handle' on this stuff??????

Whooee that Roman Surface a whole lot of trig that I don't even want to touch.. for me though reminds me of diatom forms... and would be cool to make one in dichroic glass.. another tangent.... will warn you I have 'senile ADD'.. so better keep on track for now...

OHhhh just noticed you in RO, recently met a sweety from Bucharest here on internship.. so better keep on track for now...

Well after updating to WXP SP3..... and searching around Process Explorer to no avail..........

And then stumblin around thru a fog of ImgBrn settings,.....i.e.turned off 'burn protection', tried resetting speed and think ended up with minimal 1.2x write setting??......etc....

Found another fresh Maxwell cheap 'Ritek' disc, and fired up ImgBrn again with same .iso file previously tried....

and guess I got volume to 'lock out' a defaulted que from Windows??..that showed up in task bar tray, just closed it.......... sorry folks can't recall all the dinking around.. but give you a log if you like...

So after a couple of diff errors... 'Command Sequence Error' and 'Power Calibration Area Error'??...... gave it another 'burn boot' and it finally burned me a working DVD Video (guess that's MPEG 2 video, by some standards)

So seems to have finally worked, with the only issue is the slide show just keeps replaying... suffer!!! or hit the kill switch........

So at this point I know I can now burn a DVD-Video that will play on a average home player... so beginners luck... now what, whys, and hows, I can only guess...

I have been trying to comprehend 'use and settings' in the IB guide-Help section, though still mostly greek to me.... maybe in time it'll all make more sense....

So for the curious onlookers here's the last log if you care to analyze and offer any insights... steep learning curve for me ...

Oh yeah......... it looks to me that I can build these .iso files right here in Image Burn program, and not deal with the Windows movie maker... or DVD Flick converter... long as I'm not concerned with WMM labeling and editing functions.... and would not need to convert jpeg type files, to iso files ahead of time... is that right??..

I guess the disadvantage would be no control over image duration and progression... that is, in the final product I may have to keep clicking thru the jpeg images with the player remote...???

all 'Constructive comments' welcome.... just no more 'auto response' grief from Kryten... get a life....rhetorically speaking......

thanks folks its a start.....

In some of the logs you posted last, you have tried to reuse used discs. The ones that are new discs, pretty much indicates that the burner is struggling with those discs. Any chance you can try with some better quality of media, like Verbatim?

The low speed could indicate DMA issues or just that the burner is struggling with the burn.

DMA fix:

Main Menu -> Tools -> Reset DMA

OK thanks Cynthia... tried sorting thru DMA reset in Device Mgr.. found it an tried reset, to 'DMA when available' only option it seemed... presume the Img Burn, Tool setting is more temp, per burn, but will try to member that one.... guess it won't conflict with Dev Mgr and may reinforce the setting and reduce error rates....

still trying to sort out DMA and PIOs.... we'd be lost w/o google... as still trying to figure out the IB forum search in 'four letter words'....

so just give it like <DMAxx> and let it sort???.... search didn't like <DMA settings>... (and most of my four letter words not for mixed company)

Also you mentions the disc grade themselves should help in overcoming the errors and slow speed... no problem, as out of old stock anyway...did little shopping and ran into some those notorious 'Data-Life Plus Verbatim' series over on Amazon... sounds like some Taiyos may be the safer way to go ATT for reliable -R quality... as kinda buying a 'pig in a poke' w/ online shopping.....

Did find a nice discussion in Verbatim 'disgruntled customer reviews'..... about substrate dyes and manufacturing quality, and advantage of +Rs error correction, when shoe fits.... being a small demand -R burner, sounds like worth going Taiyo, for -R error suppression.....

So's we'll go get some fresh meat and see how the BBQ smokes... rhetorically speaking...

So thanks Cynthia for advice... burning and learning....

No, ImgBurn's 'Reset DMA' feature is a system wide fix.

Roger that L'UK... and looks like we get 'DMA if available'....

did some info surfing and see that DMA is 'Direct Memory Access', vice WinXP's PIO 'Program I/O'.......

thereby avoiding slower PIO CPU route, and sticking to DMA bus routes, when not already in use...... and thereby faster data transfer from hard drive files... to burner project files it seems...

only in these machines is a 'Bus route' quicker... but getting the picture......

Still haven't figured how to do forum 'search' in 'four letter words'.... how's that done?? like when want to search for <DMA>or <PIO> just use some filler??

My own personal thoughts on the search functions in forums (not only this one) is that they are tricky to deal with. It's much easier to search through Google. Just add forum.imgburn.com in the search row and you get what you want with as many characters you will search on.

It's now even possible to use Google directly in this forum if you use the Google Custom Search window above the old forum search window.

Regarding DMA issues, XP was notorious on dropping back to PIO mode on burners/readers. Vista + Windows 7 I've never encountered it personally.

AHhh, thanks for the details Cynthia... tricky 'search' indeed.... <settings DMA> did finally get a result..... and yeah see Google up there, but not aware could narrow to 'IB.com' in search parameters... have to try that...

and your note on 'WinXP resetting to PIO'... have seen others make mention of this... but not, that in Vista and Win 7, a nonissue, a bit more insight....

for me slow burn times not such a concern... but if induces more errors, not good...

In all Vista sounded like a pain in ass... so avoided.... now that Win 7 available maybe time for newer OS...... same goes for the old machine..... but for my needs been sufficient, so far!! .....just hard to toss aside the old shoes, and break in a new pair....

But ATT I am very tempted to kill the XP Media Center application, as yet found it useless and in the way... have never patched into TV and remote, and doesn't seem to function in burning disc, just throws error msg... and suspect it conflicts in burn processes... seems like nothing to lose...any thoughts??

nice to have a guardian angel up there....... thanks again

Vista without Service Pack 1 was a joke. Windows 7 is IMHO just Vista SP3.

I have also that Windows Media Center thing in Windows 7. Never used it.
