Blu-ray backups dying...

Robin Gauld

Recommended Posts

I seem to be running into a problem with some Blu-ray backups I have made...

After backing up the movie with DVDFab, then burning the backup to a 25GB

Blu-ray blank, then testing said backup and it plays fine. I have just

started to go over some of my older backups, and find that they will not

play now. I put said backup into my computer, and upon checking it with

ImgBurn (in Discovery Mode), it shows the disc as being written to, but

there is no information on the disc... It is almost as if the information

on the disc has vanished... I am very confused by this, and am now wondering

if all of my backups are going to eventually disappear...

I of course no longer have the log file from when I burned the backup, as

it was a long time ago now, but I do remember that there was no problems

with the burning process itself...

If it does help, here is a copy of the recent log file:

Probably it is true. I don't have the link on me offhand, but I remember reading an article about BD-R discs, and having even really shorter lifespans that CD/DVD-Rs, though according to that particular article it was estimated to be only 10 years.

I guess it just seems that companies now are really skimping on good quality dyes, though it is a bit surprising that it is already done so quickly with bluray discs.

I know that for a fact when CD-Rs first hit the consumer market, they were essentially quality discs. I have a CD-R disc from back in the days of 2x CD burners (burners ONLY, not even the rewritable drives were out just yes), and it still reads.

Be that as it may, even back in those days they estimated that recorded optical discs would last almost centuries, beyond the 'lifespan' of a pressed disc. That is really not the case, and I would somehow venture to bet that a pressed disc will outlast even the most quality of dyes used.

One thing I noticed in your log:

I 12:57:38 Destination Media Type: BD-RE (Disc ID: VERBAT-IM0-000) (Speeds: 2x)

If you wrote your backups on rewritable discs, thats perhaps the worst thing you can do. With WORMs (Write Once Read Many Times discs), like I said the lifespan may not exactly be what is advertised, but with at least decent quality dyes, and proper storage and handling you can at least get a decent life out of your discs.

Don't ever backup longterm with rewritables.

Discovery mode is for testing/burning blank media, you wouldn't / shouldn't use it for anything else.

If you want to test a burnt disc you should use Read or Verify modes. They'll soon let you know if the disc is still physically readable.

It might be an idea to Verify your burns anyway (at the time of burning - by ticking the 'Verify' box).

I am aware that Discovery Mode is for testing/burning blank media... I then switched to Read Mode if

the Memorex media is still readable and made an ISO copy on the hard drive. I also always use the

Verify option when burning BD-R/BD-RE media.

And in answer to Rincewind, I only use BD-RE media to test the backup... If the BD-RE backup plays

ok, I then burn it to a normal BD-R.

That's not strictly true is it ;)

The log you posted above doesn't have a verify section.

So what happens if you try and read/verify one of the discs you say no longer plays? Could you post a log of you doing that?

As I stated in my first post, the log file I posted was just to show a recent copy of the ImgBurn log file...

The reason there was no verify in that section of the log file is that burn was a test burn....

Again, as I said earlier, I first burn the backup to a BD-RE to test the backup on my Pioneer BDP-320,

if it plays ok, I then burn it again to a normal BD-R, and I use the verify function at that point.

At any rate, here is a copy of the log when I try to read a Memorex BD-R that has failed (no longer plays):

Ok, I will post the image of the window on the right from the LiteOn drive....

I should also let you know, it takes a very long time for ImgBurn to get the

Media Status (the LG drive takes less time to get the Media Status...)

The LG drive will get the Media Status in about 2 min, whereas the LiteOn

drive takes almost 7 min... I can only assume this is because the Memorex

Media is faulty, so it takes ImgBurn a while to get the info it needs....

Here is the info from the box on the right in the LiteOn drive:
