I too am an amateur here, using IMGburn for the first time. Burning a dvd, I got a write error. I am aware that others have reported this but do not understand the solutions offered and seem to have a different problem anyway: No Seek Complete. Log:

I checked the referenvces by Admin to the google link but these seem all to be in relation to a different problem. I hope I am not wasting anyone's time here and hope that you can offer a solution I can understand and apply.

Thank you

There where you were linked, are 5 point to try, some may apply to you some don't. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=8000

The first, with the update firmware, falls out, you have the latest installed.

The second, you could try if you have a cleaning disc around, or do it manualy if you want.

The third also apply, try 6x and 8x speeds.

The fourth also falls out, you have a normal hight burner.

Before to go with the fifth point go and buy some Verbatim MCC/MKM dye discs and try them out.

If none of them works go and buy a new drive.

You live in the same country with Lightning UK! and you don't understand him? Hope that this is more english to you. :)

Thanks to you both. It's not Lightning UK's sentences I don't understand ISF God, it's the technical language. To take a simple example, I take it that 'firmware' is the new term for what we used to call 'hardware' as disticnt from software. But I don't want to bore you with this.... Your explication of L UK's reply is very helpful as you relate his advice in the link to which he points to the log I submitted, thus enabling me to work out what to do but also to understand for the future.

It is all very well (and I don't want to seem ungrateful for the work of people like L UK) but my experience of experts over the years - and not just in the field of computing - is that their advice is often couched in technical language well above the level of understanding of the questioner. FAQs are often useful but they would be considerably more so if they were accompanied by glossaries. We have an excellent computer magazine in the UK (Computeractive) which has built a deserved reputation by (i) writing articles in plain English and (ii) by having a running glossary in every edition.

Ah well....that's my gripe for today.

I have now ordered some Verbatim discs as they seem to be recommended by everyone and the ones I have used thus far have been cheapies.

Firmware is like the OS (operating system) for your drive.

Manufacturers release new versions to improve the drives ability to burn different discs and to fix bugs.

It only take 2 seconds to Google 'firmware' and you could have found out what it was.

It's just like using a dictionary to find the meaning of a word you've never seen before.

I am duly reprimanded....yes I could and should have used Google (as I have done for many other things).

But now to real problems...I have just tried to burn a ripped dvd using a Verbatim disc this time. When the burn reached 100%, the drive opened and closed by itself and started the burn all over again (to my astonishment). OK I let it go ahead but was then disappointed when it stopped some way through and reported I/O Error. The log:

When I/O Error came up, I clicked Continue to see what happened but it re-appeared a moment later so I stoppped and closed down. Then, on an instinct, I put the disc in my tv and to my astonishment (again !), it played from start to finish.

What is going on here ?

When the burn reached 100%, the drive opened and closed by itself and started the burn all over again (to my astonishment).

No, it wasn't continuing a burn it had already finished. The next phase was to clear the drive by opening and closing before verifying. It is even in your log:

Also according to your recent log, you seem to have a lot of buffer issues:

{This is back earlier in your log when burning)

W 09:46:56 Waiting for buffers to recover... (LBA: 476032)

W 09:47:03 Waiting for hard disk activity to reach threshold level...

When burning, it is a good idea to not multitask or use other programs that can drain resources from the burner. If that is not the case, then consider updating drivers to your controller. To find out what controller you have and get the right drivers go to www.ma-config.com

You can also consider increasing the buffer a bit from 40MB. To do that go to tools -> settings -> I/O tab -> Page 2 and where it says 'buffer size' you can move the slider around to the desired size.

As for the verifying errors afterwards, that I am not too sure. I would say maybe burn again probably at either 6x or 8x. Also you could also try 2.4x rated verbatims instead. Those will usually be over sped to 4x though for most recent burners, but as far as I know I have successfully burnt and verified 2.4x rated media so far.

Still perhaps someone else can clue in on why verifying failed...

That's terrific. I WAS multitasking while the burning was in progress so I'll make sure not to do that in future. What you say makes sense. Yes I saw the entry: 10:0941 Cycling Tray before Verify... but could not understand why the burning process then went back to the beginning. As I reported, when I put the dvd in to the tv, it played the film perfectly normally. So why did the process go on beyond simply verifying to starting again ? Should I have let it continue ?

I will check the drivers as well. Thanks for the link and also for the comment about the buffers. I will increase the buffer figure there.

Thanks again for all your advice. It really does help me to understand how these things work.

It didn't ever start again.

It burns - 0 to 100%

cycles the tray

then verifies 0 - 100%

If you pay close attention to the screen during those two stages you'll notice subtle differences in the design/layout.

Not only that, the message in the status bar goes from 'Writing Sectors...' to 'Verifying Sectors...'.

Both operations are totally different things.

You'll have realised....I'm a slow learner ! It's the usual problem with having to absorb abd understand a large amount of new data - the log. The first few times you see it, it doesn't make any sense. In language learning there is a principle that you have to hear/see a word 8 times before you can use it yourself competently. I think the same principle applies here: you have to see a number of logs before you can begin to read and interpret them properly. The next time I burn a disc, I will follow the log carefully and try to understand the individual sections and lines.

Thanks again for all your help...I feel much more confident using IMGburn now.
