Other notes:

1) I have tried defragging and restarting.

2) I have tried using different ports for my external DVD+-R/RW drive.

3) I have tried using new discs.

4) I have tried using Nero.

5) I have tried restarting ImgBurn.

6) I have tried writing on 1x as well as 3x speed.

7) The FAQ says that XP users should uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, but I see no option for uninstalling that group, just the individual controllers under it.

Please help me. I've been trying really hard to get this to work.

I am running Windows 7 on a Lenovo ThinkPad SL500. My discs are Memorex DVD+R 16x 4.7 Go 120min. My disc drive is a Gear Head 8XDVDEXT. Let me know if you need any other specs.

Try at a higher speed than 3x. Usually for single layered discs 8x should be fine, and also you can try getting better media rather than Ritek. Your discs 'say' it is 'Memorex' but the MID (disc ID) is Ritek, not Memorex. Verbatim +R discs are usually recommended, those have the MID MCC.

If that still doesn't work, you can always get a proper burner, (external with USB 2.0 enclosure). Notebook burners (slimelines) are junk.

I've now tried it with 8x speed as well, and with a different ISO. Still not working. It gives the same error.

Are these things seriously unusable? I know they're not great quality but I'd hope that they would basically function. Not to mention, the local office store didn't have any other options. =/ You're sure it's a fault of the hardware? There's no way to get this stuff to work?

Well I also had a notebook and when I used it's burner, it worked for me so I would say it is hit or miss. Although it is not recommended to use slimeline burners for double layered media at all, usually you should be able to get away with using it in tight spots, with single layered media and CDs.

Before going and buying another drive though, try my other suggestion in getting better media, and if getting another burner is not an option yet, if you have a desktop computer then consider burning your disc on a desktop burner instead.

Thats all I can really offer at the moment.

I believe the FAQ entry you're talking about is the DMA one - your issue is nothing to do with DMA.

That aside, it says to uninstall the controller entries and not the channels. You don't even have any channel entries listed - that's probably where the confusion is coming from.

The USB controller in your machine seems to have issues with the USB controller in the external burner's enclosure (that's where the semaphore timeout issue comes from)... so you need to change your enclosure and hope the new one works better.

You should install service pack 1 for Windows 7.

Aha, it was a problem with the funky usb connector! (It had one end as a USB, and the other end was split into a USB and one of those small things you use to charge your cell phone. The instruction manual said to put both USBs into the computer, with one acting as a power source. I solved this by putting the power-USB into my cell phone charger adapter and plugging it in.) It works now. Thank you so much. You have my gratitude. If you were right here I would give you some delicious baked goods.
