Check For Updates Less Often

I'd like an option to check for updates Daily, Weekly, and Monthly, instead of just

every time the program starts. What do you think, LUK and others? Thanks.

Just to add to what the guys have said, ImgBurn will only check for an update once per day, regardless of how many times the program is started. When you start ImgBurn, one of the things it does is check how long since it last looked for an update. This information is timestamped in a registry key. (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ImgBurn\LastCheckForProgramUpdate).

When ImgBurn is loaded it will check this registry key to see if it should check for an update. If less than 24 hours have passed since the last time it checked, it won't go any further. If ImgBurn sees that more than 24 hours have passed it will then ping one of 3 large websites to test for an internet connection before polling the ImgBurn server enquiring about a new version.

Hope this helps.

I don't see why checking for updates is a problem, are you on dial up maybe ? I prefer ImgBurn to do it everytime it starts up, then like corny said I know I always have the latest version :)

I would prefer it check less often, for privacy mainly. Call me paranoid, but I'd

rather LUK not know what days my IP address runs his software. I leave update

check turned off most of the time, and check free-codecs to see if any software

has been updated (ImgBurn, PGC Edit, AnyDVD, DVDFab...).

EDIT: spelling/grammar

I really don't think he's interested in your IP address...

Perhaps not, but there are certain others who take an interest in his software.

I just don't want the program phoning home every day. I request or suggest

that we be given more choices. Every load, daily, weekly, or monthly seems

like a good starting place. Over a month would be excessive.

There are others reasons one might want to check less often, besides privacy

concerns. The software isn't even updated daily for the general public. There

has been a 2-4 month interval between each major upgrade. Why not allow a

weekly and monthly check? Maybe bi-weekly and bi-monthly.

Wahoo, yes I have a lovely big collection of IP addresses now. I often read through them all before I go to bed.

Ok, I lied. The update file isn't even anywhere that I can get logs to anyway. So that's the privacy thing out of the window.

To be honest I'm with corny on this one.

Either you're super paranoid and turn checking off, or you're not and you leave it on.

Somewhere in the middle just seems.... erm.... somewhat pointless.

I could well end up implementing it (because I'm nice like that) but I still think it's a pretty lame idea.

 , i got some bed time reading you may prefer instead of log files if you want ;)

@calweycn

switch updates off as advised above and check manually whenever you want to check for updates

HELP Button >Check for IB updates . simple and sorted  everybody's happy ;)

so you don't want an automatic notification of any updates to V2 then ? which may immediately cure any problems your experiencing !

why not just turn check for updates off??

Because I want to know about the updates eventually, but I don't have

to know about them immediately unless I'm experiencing problems. I

also check free-codecs almost daily for any new software.

ImgBurn hasn't been updated for 2-4 months, except for beta testers.

Isn't it overkill to have millions of people checking for updates every

day? Why not allow more realistic intervals like weekly, bi-weekly,

monthly, and bi-monthly?

It's not that hard to put a little menu or check box there. Why do you

care what reason someone has for checking less often? Why waste a

lot of bandwidth and server time for nothing?

No, it's not. The logs can still be subpoenaed or intercepted by other parties,

given the current legal climate. So I might prefer to check less often for that

reason. Plus, the software has never been updated daily for the general user

base. Try 2-4 months between each major upgrade.

Maybe you want to get updates without your IP on a log somewhere as a

person using the program every day. Maybe you don't want to upgrade to

each new version immediately (early adopter), but you would like like to

know about the upgrades eventually (without checking manually). There

are many reasons to allow it and no strong reason not to. Accusing those

who value privacy of paranoia is a bit silly.

I could well end up implementing it (because I'm nice like that) but I still think it's a pretty lame idea.

I'm not accusing you of collecting IP addresses. I am worried that someone

else might collect them. Given the legal situation of this software, where it

is not allowed to discuss existing features (like on-the-fly burning), it makes

me think that you have something to hide.

The software has lots of features that might be viewed as pointless by you.

That hasn't stopped you from adding them. Choice makes a better program.

What seems pointless is all-or-nothing with no middle ground.

If you're that paranoid then it surpasses issues with IMGburn, turn off the look for updates .As paranoid as you are I'm suprised that you surf the net and heres a tip theres nothing that cant be hacked if you put in enough time and effort .Between your paranoia and the poster wanting to know if IMGburn has spyware installed I'm at a loss for words The member with the spyware question where does he come for an answer IMGburn forum ,does that make sense

Total wank.

If anyone is worried about their IP addy, then spoof it. There are lots of spoofing progs out there.

As for the legalities of this program, it does not rip - it burns. Same as Ner0 and Roxio and others.

That's not the only issue. The all-or-nothingness of it was the main issue.

A person might want to check for updates regularly, but they don't need

to always have the latest. Give the ad hominems a rest.

Being able to burn files and create ISOs makes it a de facto ripper. I've

posted on this issue numerous times. Nero and others do not have the

same functionality as ImgBurn, so they aren't good comparisons. What

you should say is that ImgBurn won't circumvent copy protection. Nor

will Nero and Roxio and others. It can rip unprotected discs or "drives"

if you know what I mean. (And I think you do.)

Crap. Ner0 can make an image file - it calls it an NRG file.

ImgBurn is not a ripper. Ripping involves decrypting. Unencrypted files can be copied in Window$ Exporer, too. Is Micro$oft also subject to "legal issues"?

Get real and put brain into gear.

Hey calweycn please take on board the replies you are receiving in all of the posts you have made in the past 24 hours on this subject.....

Please don't be the latest in a long list of idiots who come here, post illadvisedly all over the forum and eventually either get banned or ridiculed so much that they don't come back. :)

Various beta members as well as the programs author have tried to answer your posts and pointed out the reasons why some of your posts are not welcome.....

Chill out eh ?

Horseshit. That's about the most stupid and ridiculous statement I've had the misfortune of reading. Is Nero a ripper? What about UltraISO? MusicMatch Jukebox? Do any of these programs remove Macrovision? What about ARccoSS? Doh!

The way I see it, you have three (3) alternatives.

1. Understand what you're talking about. Confirmation of your naivety is not a requirement in this forum.

2. Learn to use the software and understand what it's capable of.

3. Don't use it. Simple.

Let me get this straight. You're saying that ImgBurn is a ripper but it won't read protected disks. This devious program also has the ability to grab unprotected files from any source and copy them where you like? Even Windows Explorer does that. Get a clue before you hurt yourself.

Yo calweycn your IP and others peoples IPs are logged all the time why don't you just shut it and enjoy the benefits of this fantastic freeware program.

And anyway i have tried the program with it turned off and turned on and it doesn't make a damn difference to how fast it loads.

@calweycn:

I have logged your IP address (I think there was more than one but I don't remember) and have posted it in a large number of forums and other places for all to see. By now it has made itself around the entire internet. Since many people (and agencies) now know your IP you shouldn't fear getting updates anymore.

I hope this has helped ease your mind.

Woof!
