Real writing speeds for DVD?

Hi All,

I purchased today a DVD Burner Samsung SE-208A/TSBSA and I started using the DVD with ImgBurn and I found it to be terribly slow. I am testing with a DVD-R (max 16X) and I am burning a OpenSUSE ISO Image and the write rate is constant at 0.7X (970kB/s). Overall, the estimated time to completion is approx 1 hour and 15 minutes.

I went to Samsung and I found there is a firmware update for the dvd burner and I installed it. But it makes no difference. Below is the log from imgburn software. You can see the write speed was set to 8X.

I am using a Windows XP with no Service Packs because my main computer has been affected by a virus and I set a temporary computer.

I also used a blank disk for a ISO file and the speed was comparable (still 0.7X if I recall correctly).

The DVD Burner was not new (even if I purchased it from a store as new), because the package was open and I found a written DVD from somebody else inside.

Kind regards,

Nicolae

This sounds like a USB 1.0 issue. You need the drive to be communicating via a USB 2.0 port to see anything over ~1MB/s (~0.7x DVD speed)

Even so, your discs are only supported at a maximum speed of 8x by the drive's firmware.

Hi,Thank you very much for your answer. You were right, it was because I didn't install the USB drivers (at the time I could not find the chipset drivers for my computer) and after I installed them, I was able to burn a DVD with a maximum speed of over 6X. The maximum speed of the drive, of 8X is enough for me. I found out my DVD burner can be purchased over the internet at around AUD35, probably this drive is one of the cheapest at this moment.

Best regards,

Nicolae
