Does Imgburn test a DVD's maximum write speed before writing the disc?

I have Imgburn set to MAX write speed. My DVD recorder (NEC 2510a) can write at 8X max. I put some Fuji 4X and Imgburn wrote at 8X. Why did Imgburn write at 8X when discs are marked as 4X? Do I need to manually select write speeds for all my discs? I assumed Imgburn was smart, and would keep the speed within the limit of the disc.

 

Does Imgburn use the lead-in to test for maximum write speed? It doesn't seem like it, since it burns everything at 8X.

More than likely your firmware has been updated to take account of a faster write strategy.

lol yes, the drive (and it's firmware) controls the speed.

 

'MAX' is simply the max the drive supports on that media, be that 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x etc.

 

The program can't magically make the drive burn faster than it actually thinks is possible.

 

Next time you put a disc in, look at the 'Supported Write Speeds' info in the box on the right.

Those speeds are what the drive claims it supports on that media.

okay thanks. It must be my modified firmware I'm using then. I wasn't sure how this whole thing worked. Now I know it's the firmware causing it to burn faster on these discs.

the same disc can have different supported speeds in different drives too
