Imported Verbatim BDR-DL Media, the way to go?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm relatively new to bluray burning, and therefore selecting the best bluray media.

A browse around in here obviously suggests that as with their DVD+R DL media, Verbatim is the way to go.

When I bought my burner, I already purchased a pack of blurays to get started, before I'd used this forum. I ended up with some TDK Japanese Imports. I've tried to burn one image on them so far. Disk one failed shortly after the burn, well, around the 20% mark anyway, nowhere near layer 2. A second attempt appeared to work. (I've only tried burning at 2x as I thought this may help)

I was initially put off Verbatim BDR DL by the price.... to be honest it wasn't worth it for my own usage.... however, I've just spotted that the same shop I got my TDK Imports from also import Verbatim media, although it's selling out fast.

£144 for a 50 pack. That's a price I can live with, is the Japanese Import stuff the same high quality as the disks you guys use?

I'd imagine so, but thought I'd just check before spending such a large amount of money on media.

Obviously I still have 18 of the TDK BDR DL media to use for now, though I can't be sure how many will burn/verify successfully.

I also only have a USB burner, so I'm hoping that maybe the shortfall in quality of burner can be made up for by using top media.

I've got so used to DVD media working perfectly, even cheap Mirror DVD+R DL, that I'm not used to coasters any more... even the cheap TDK media worked out at a few quid a pop.

Anyway, Verbatim is clearly the best name in the business, I just wanted to see if you guys import from Japan as well, and to check they're also great and reliable.

Thanks,

Vin.

This is the disk I'm looking at, it appears to be printable as well, which is exactly what I'm after

Now I read on, it seems the shop also recommend Panasonic 5x BDR DL media.

Also, now that I look further, I see they also offer the Verbatim disks above at 20 for £71. This could be a better first buy, in order to test the disks.

Still a lot of upfront money to risk, but probably better than those TDK disks that I ended up with.

Ah Hell!

Just tried the third TDK BDR-DL from the pack, and got en error at just 12%

Need to do something about this, these TDK Jap Imports were clearly a complete waste of money.

In the bin another one goes.

It would have, at this stage, been cheaper to purchase the disk of the image I'm burning ;) (or nearly)

OK, well the shop I purchased the TDK disks from has agreed I can return the remaining 15 disks, and will refund me for the entire amount. Can't say fairer than that, I'll then order the Japanese Import Verbatim 50gb disks in the hope they're every bit as reliable, and use the same dye as the disks the people of this forum use and recommend.

Strange though, re. the TDK disks. Reviews I've read are practically all favourable, and the shop themselves said they've never had anybody complain about these disks before. Makes me wonder if it's my burner!

Anyway, hopefully the Verbatim's will do the job, and I'll stick to buying them in the future.

Cheers, and thanks for reading.

Vin.

Sure it's your burner. It dosen't like that discs. Isn't mentioned in the list that Sony claim it should work, though some TDK is in that list but not that flavour.

An updated firmware that may add more media to support isn't available at the moment.

Here's the list, hope it will guide you in your purchase. https://www.sony-optiarc.eu/uploads/media/BDX-S600U_media_list.pdf

Thanks for your reply.

Strange these incompatibility issues... strange that sometimes it just burns and verifies 100%, and other times it fails.

I hope the Verbatim's work better... if not, my 3 week old burner will need to be replaced already, with a proper internal drive this time, and I'll forget about ever buying a USB model again! ;)

I don't suppose anyone knows if the Verbatim BDR DL ID matches up to anything on that compatibility list?

Sadly, Sony don't seem to support this burner with newer firmwares.

Cheers.

Good to know, thanks.

In that case I'll hope for better results once the Verbatim media arrives, and assuming I get zero coasters, I'll stick with them from now on, and recommend them to some other people I know who are getting bluray burners soon.

Thanks for the help.

I'll make a final post once the Verbatim's are here, and report how I get on with them.

Cheers.

So, my replacement Japanese Import Verbatim disks have arrived.

I'll post info here, just to see if the dye differs from other versions of Verbatim BDR DL disks that users may use?

The image is too small to see what you highlighted there, anyway.

Please, look again and pay attention this time.

He used TDKBLD-RFB-000 while in the list of Sony is RBD as I already mentioned in my post as not that flavour.

Sorry for the lack of attention.

I can not insert png images in the forum. The warning tells me that the format is not allowed.

I use imageshack ... but it always converts only in PNG.

If anybody from the UK happens to be reading, then what single layer disks do they prefer, and which online shops do they get them from?

Am now quite happy with my Verbatim dual layer BD-Rs, and have a 100% success rate so far.

Thing is, when I look around for single layer disks, they seem to cost around the same per disk, or more than I paid for Verbatim dual layer disks!

I'm obviously missing out on something here, so just thought I'd ask.

When I ordered my burner and just wanted some disks to go with it, I picked up a few 10 packs of Maxell single layer disks.

They seem to have worked fine so far, and were just £7.49 per tub at the time. Not any longer. I got them from Play.com at the time, but on offer.

They're sold out at the moment, and 3rd party sellers are selling at £25 for 10, obviously I'm not going to be buying those.

I've used Taiyo Yuden single layer DVDs for as long as I can remember. But their single layer bluray disks also seem to cost more than I'm paying for Verbatim dual layers at the moment.

The shop I'm getting my Verbatim's from sell a lot of TDK single layer disks, but after my experience with their dual layer disks, I'm reluctant to buy their single layer ones... especially as the shop doesn't supply the disk ID to compare with my drives compatibility list. I did spot some cheapish Philip somethingorother Disk ID disks ,which are on my compatibility list, but I've already read in another forum where Lightning UK recommended somebody else try a different type of idsk.... so I guess these aren't really all that good.

So yeah, if you happen to be reading this, and are in the UK, what single layer BD-Rs do you prefer, what do you pay, and from where?

Thanks,

Vin.
