Burning BR (Video) Disc problems (others okay)

I've been using the program (and kept it updated) literally for years.  I burn lots (LOTS) of data discs all the time, and it appears to still be working fine.

 

A few years back, I did do some burning of BR discs (BD25's) and had no problem, obviously this was several versions ago.  But in the last day I had the need to do so again, so re-checked my settings and the 'tutorial' and it seemed I hadn't forgotten anything settings wise.  So off I go, luckily burning to a BD-RW (I always do before committing to a permanent). 

 

No Go.  The burning appears to work fine, the 'verify' passed (I ALWAYS verify!), but the disc simply will not play in any of my BR players (I have 6 scattered around the house... yes, it's a bit much, but everyone gives out 'free' BR players when buying a new flatscreen, a new home theater box, you name it). 

 

Now, the tutorial specifies that one use:

 

MODEL1/2048

UDF

2.50

 

which is what my (possibly poor) memory says is right, and is the same setting(s) I use for data discs.

 

But again, the result(s) simply will not play.  The source file(s) WILL play across the network to (here we go again) several media players that play BR (and DVD) discs across the network, so from the standpoint of that, it works fine.  Just not from the burned media (some of those players have BR disc players as well, and they won't play the burned discs either).

 

So, I'm at a halt here.  I figure there must be some 'trick' I['m missing out on, but for the life of me I can't remember it, or find it on the site here  The RW discs are okay (Verbatim) and check out, and of course do pass verify.  This did work, again, several years ago.

Result:  No difference.  Disc refuses to play in any player (starts up, then stalls).  Stand-alone types tend to give out a 'disc dirty' message, for whatever reason.  Several recent BD-RW and BD25 burns (not BD's but MKV's) play perfectly.

 

FYI, I thought the logfile would have it, but it doesn't.  This is on a Vista/64 box, 6core AMD CPU, 8GB ram, (2) 1TB SATA drives.

Okay, I continued to try and figure this out.  Found a posing on another website that takes ImgBurn to task for making the 'prefer format without spare areas' as default, and the poster had run this down as the reason why burning to BD-RE disc types failed.

 

Now. way back when, when I did some burning 'straight to disc' was at least 3 years ago, and I had some Ritek BD-RE's I had formatted, but had bought a file of Verbatim's later on (and formatted them) and thought perhaps that particular setting had been changed in the interim so pulled out one of the 'original' Riteks and tried burning, but with the same result unfortunately.  Will try re-formatting one of the Verbatim's (with that particular setting 'unchecked' and give it a run.

 

I searched back for this particular problem on this site, and their were 'hints' as to it, but not very specific.  But the complaint was very specific on that other site, and I didn't try burning to a BD-R (at $1 a piece) so tie up my machine with the BD Burner (Pioneer) later this morning re-formatting a disc, and give that a whirl (again, since the 'source' data plays perfectly fine on my network players, just not from the BD-RE's I try to burn).

 

Oh... just for fun, I 'made' a Imgburn ISO from the original disc structure and burned that.  Same (didn't work) result, although again my network players played the ISO just fine, thank you.  Now on to the formatting.

Well, nope, nothing works.  Broke down and did a BD-R burn, it doesn't work.

 

There is something wrong in the way this program is 'working' (or not), when burning/creating actual BluRay format discs.  The tutorial must be missing some piece of information, or something else is wrong.

And oh, btw, this is the first 'coaster' I've burned in at least 3 years. I knew the BD-RW's were trying to tell me something.

You are burning and verifying the burn without problems, so blaming the program is not in order here.  ImgBurn is telling you that you have an exact copy of what you want to burn.  

Take a look at the original Iso and/or whatever you used to create it.  

Make sure AnyDVD is disabled when you burn.

When burning do nothing else with the system until it is completely done and see if that helps.

Make sure ImgBurn is set to it's default settings.

I re-installed the program yesterday, just to make sure it hadn't been corrupted; the settings are at default.

 

AnyDVD is disabled, unless I'm actually ripping something I turn if 'off' anyway (grayed out) just to make sure.

 

I've re-ripped the disc 4 times, twice to files and twice to ISO (re-burning that last ISO rip as I write this, I'm a glutton for punishment).

 

Every rip I've done plays perfectly with the several network players I own.  No burn plays in the 6 players I own (up to and

including the newest, a Samsung 3D capable player; actually, it's kinda the worst feature wise, although it does do 3D, it was 'free')

 

I've burned to several discs, both BD-RW (Ritek and Verbatim) and to BD-R (Ritek), first coaster in about 3 years.

 

I've followed the 'How To' at http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?/topic/9512-how-to-write-a-blu-ray-video-disc-using-imgburn/

to the letter when burning files; ISO burns, there isn't much (if anything) to actually 'set'.

 

And yes, all that horsepower and whatever, IMGBurn is the only program running outside of a couple windows explorers and such.  I don't even have any anti-virus/anti-malware installed on that machine, as I don't use it to browse the internet or d/l anything (it's my 7th machine, so it literally has only a couple tasks in life to do, and is behind three (yes, three) h/w firewalls both in my local network and my VPN/ISP.  Also on it's own UPS (1KW) for good measure. 

 

I have the 'original' tested BD-R burns I dug up yesterday after I ran into problems.  I just don't think there was any 'special' settings I did to produce them, except of course it was 3+ years ago and several IMGBurn versions ago.

 

Something to do with Vista64?  I have another machine that's a Vista/32 with the same model (Pioneer) bluray burner in it if I get really desperate.  These machines have had Win7 on them years back, but networking problems made me take them back to the shop and Vista put on them.  I may be the only person in the world (although I doubt it) that had Win7 muck up their network so badly (it's a mix of windows and linux) where Vista was a 'solution' (!!).  But there it is.

Make an ISO from those same source files, mount it in a virtual drive (Virtual CloneDrive etc) and then play it via a proper BD video software player (PowerDVD etc).

 

If that works, it should also work when burnt to disc - in that same software player anyway. Playing the raw files isn't the same as playing the disc as a proper BD video disc.

 

A straight copy of an unprotected disc to an ISO and then burning back to a new blank should work fine though... there no real room for error in that.

PowerDVD plays the ripped file just fine, both the ISO rip (takes off the instant Daemon tools mounts it from the hard drive, or as soon as the burned disc is inserted) and the file (BDMV/Certificate) rip.  Burn either to disc, both don't work on a 'standard' stand alone, or a network player with BR disc player (which, btw, plays those files across the network just like PowerDVD does, right away with no hesitation whatsoever).  You're right in that the ISO 'should' have no room for error, but although it plays fine on both the PC and through a network media player, the burned disc starts up then stalls right at loading.
 

I tend to get blinders on with problems such as this, so I pulled out another BD disc I knew to be BD25 size (secondary or 'bonus' disc of a 2-disc set are prime candidates) but it acted just the same, playing perfectly in any format directly from the ripped source and stalling right after loading on any burned media. 

 

One of the other 'paths' I've tripped across is to attempt to 'filter' the ripped files through tsMuxr and see what happens (grasping a bit at straws here), but it's kind of Edison like, trying every conceivable way one can figure may get it to work.  Something is keeping it from loading up, I've even seen where folks have said that if a 'proper' disc lacks any copy protection it won't play on a standard player.  Interesting idea, except I have several discs that don't have any (independent studio and such) that have no problems playing.  

 

The way it appears the players are acting is as if the Certificate folder isn't there. However, once again, I have noticed several discs I have don't have a Certificate folder whatsoever yet play just fine.

 

Well, I'm a bit on the running out of options to try, just a couple more and I'm out of ideas.  Could it be my drive?  I have two machines, each with the same drive (checking f/w).; the older is old, it was the drive I originally burned 'discs that played', so ran a burn test and.... no go yet again, but used the newest vr. of ImgBurn.

 

So that's another thing that gets checked off. Sill have not gotten a single burned disc to work.  The biggest thing that has changed is the version of IMGBurn.  I still have all the versions going back to Aug09 so I think I'll be giving that a try.

Success!  But I had to go all the way back to v2.5.1 to make it work!

 

Where exactly IMGBurn went 'off the tracks' is a good question, perhaps someone who has the time can tear into the program internals to figure it out. 

 

One thing I did find out is that IMGBurn has gotten a VERY POOR rating from most folks/sites of late, mostly due to all the spamware/baggage it seems to have collected up lately; I'm sure that folks don't mind it IF they have the opportunity to 'opt out' (even the old 2.5.1 had something, but was easily refused).

 

But beyond that, usability and operability is at question here.  When it lost the ability to properly burn is a good question.  If I was still working for a living, I'd give you a quote on what my services would cost to 'hunt it down'.  But I think some young person with all their full facilties would do a better job.

 

But I continue to test 2.5.1, but I'm pretty sure everything that I remember that works in the past, still works.  Just not on any of the newer versions (in particular 2.5.8!)

If the last version to work correctly for burning BD Video discs was 2.5.1.0, you'd surely find tons of similar threads here on the forum... and obviously that's not the case at all.

 

The code that does the actual burning hasn't really changed between that version and the current one. If you logged every single I/O command from each version, you'd see they're identical - there's very little scope for change with these things!

 

I don't like to dismiss reports like yours though so what I'll do now is burn a BD25 ISO (with a file system created by something else) to a BD-RE and test it in my Sony standalone and also my PS3 - sorry but they're all I have available. I'll then do the same with a BDMV folder (so ImgBurn is actually building the file system) and report back when I'm done.

 

There's no doubt in my mind that both will work just fine.

 

btw, you should update the firmware on your drive.

Update 1...

 

The ISO burnt and verified fine with an LG BH12LS38 FW:1.02-D0 on a Verbatim BD-RE. It played perfectly (I tried every chapter) in a Sony BDP-S570 and Sony PS3. It also played in PowerDVD 11 and TMT 5 on the PC.

 

Update 2...

 

The BDMV folder burnt and verified fine with an LG BH12LS38 FW:1.02-D0 on a Verbatim BD-RE. It played perfectly (I tried every chapter) in a Sony BDP-S570 and Sony PS3. It also played in PowerDVD 11 and TMT 5 on the PC.

After reading the update you sent and after I burned another flawless 50GB disc I have come to the conclusion I have a spindle of 50 disc that had 30 from one lot that was fine and a balance of 20 disc that may have been a different lot which happen to be trash as that is where they are now residing, in my trash bin. I am going to erase and reburn the BD-RE 25GB VERBATIMs I have and that should confirm my belief regarding the thought that the last 20 disc are simply no good, I will let you know if this is the case in the morning when I can get this done, Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it, Daniel

I would suggest that you put down the disaster (according to WIRED) of the health care site programming, and stop trying to be the tail that wags the dog.  By blaming the user or the firmware of the burning drive for the problem, when it did work (obviously and now confirmed) at one point, that something changed, and it isn't the drive or the user.

 

It's the programmer.  Proof Positive here.  Sorry, but I went back to school three times during my career and spent a better than fair piece running around the country firing folks (watch 'up in the air' for a good example of 30 years of my life, I put a good 10,000 programmers and engineers out on the street over those years), so you need to take a really hard look at what's going on with your program.
