Problems copying Blu-ray disks

I'm running the latest ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 and have used it many times in the past with success.

I'm now trying to make a copy of several Blu-ray BD-R disks I created myself using Vegas Pro. These disks all work fine. They are single layer on TDK media. I suspect these are HTL media.

The device is an LG BE14NU40, a good quality external USB drive. The technical spec says it supports everything, including BD-R LTH media.

The media I am trying to write to is Verbatim BD-R LTH 43813.

So I used Create image file from disk, and that made me an ISO image, no problem.

Then I put in the new media and used Write image file to disk.

The first time it said it couldn't write to sector 1, kept retrying, and gave up with an error. It is possible that disk was bad as I had previously tried to write to it with Nero, (and that program had said the disk was "illegal".)

The second time I tried a new disk, and this time it wrote the disk, apparently OK, but when it started to verify I got "Layouts do not match". I tried playing the disk and it partly worked but had all sorts of errors.

I have also tried burning some disks directly from Vegas Pro, to the same Verbatim disks, and it has worked perfectly. And they play perfectly. This seems to imply the hardware works, and the disks work.

Questions.

1. Can one make an ISO image from an HTL disk and write it to an LTH disk?

2. Should I try simply copying all the files to my hard disk and then use Write files/folders?

3. I looked for firmware updates. I downloaded the latest firmware from LG. I can't find how to find out the version of firmware already on the drive? When I run the updater it simply does nothing, no display. Perhaps because I'm on Win 10. I pulled out my ancient XP laptop (it says it supports XP) and tried the update on that, but the program gives an error message at once and stops.

Any suggestions please?

I have now tried copying the files to my hard disk and writing to the Verbatim BD-R as folders, and ImgBurn did it without errors, including verify.

So it does seem as though you can't make an image copy from an HTL to an LTH. Or am I basing this on inadequate information?

You're basing it on inadequate information :)

Stick to HTL media where possible, burning to LTH stuff appears a bit 'hit and miss' with your drive.

Oh and you should have posted the log so we could see the error messages the drive returned as it attempted to burn the discs.

'Hit and miss' is a good description. After burning several OK using the copy folders method, I had one fail again. Here is the log (is this right or is there a way to upload it? What about the .ibg file, is that useful, how does one view it?)

Thank you for finding that firmware. The upgrade worked correctly. After rebooting I checked the version and it was 1.01.

(I couldn't find that version, the LG site only had the previous firmware.)

Unfortunately it does not appear to have helped. I just tried a files and folders write, and it gave errors again.

I've ordered lots of good quality disks and will be careful never to buy any LTH disks again. At least I have learned something from the experience.

Here is the new log:

To date I only tried at 4x.

The label says 6x.

ImgBurn says the media supports 2x, 4x and 6x.

(Are there cases where faster can work better than slower?)

I just tried the same data that failed so many times previously. I used 2x and it worked first time, which is good news, thanks for the suggestion.

Of course it could just be luck, as I previously burned several disks at 4x without problems. I don't feel like using the remaining ones of my 50 disks to try yet more tests, although it would have the advantage of getting rid of them forever.

I'll use the rest at 2x.

On doing more reading I see there are also doubts about the lifetime of LTH disks. It would be a mistake to use them for archival purposes. (I actually don't trust any optical media for anything archival.)

BTW, you had asked about finding the firmware revision for your drive.  Probably the best way and also a way to check for firmware updates is to use ImgBurn's firmware check.  In Write mode, right click on the drive in the target drop down and choose Check for firmware updates, which I think is the last option in the list.  Before it checks for a firmware update, it should tell you what your current revision number is.

Thank you! That is an amazing feature, I just tried it.

It's not perfect, but that's the fault of the website that ImgBurn links to versus anything the author can do about it.  It just sends a drive ID string to a web site's search function.  So, it depends on how well the website is documented for firmware.  I know for things like USB drives, the firmware are a real issue.  I don't think I ever had a USB drive that that site ever found a firmware revision for.  It's probably because the actual drive inside the enclosure has a certain ID string, but the USB drive as a whole is given an entirely different ID string by the manufacturer.
