Apples555 Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 (edited) I've had this problem for something like 3 years. I kept hoping it would resolve itself, but it never happened. I have two drives. An HL-DT-ST GS23N in a MacBook Pro and a PLDS DH-16AES 5.25" drive. Both will not produce DVDs or CDs that don't skip, if they ever finish a burn. For years I used cheap media and assumed that was the problem. Recently, I got Verbatim DL media hoping to finally solve this problem. No dice. The GS23N now fails halfway through on Verbatims. Here is a log of the most recent failed burn. LIGHTNING UK! Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 You should probably invest in a new drive. If yours won't burn proper verbatim mkm-003-00 with the default settings, they're no good. Don't buy a slimline drive.
Apples555 Posted May 13, 2017 Author Posted May 13, 2017 (edited) What's a good drive available now? There's this, but the reviews are bad. I've had good experiences with Goldstar/LG drives in the past. Interestingly, the HL-DT-ST burns significantly better CDs than the PLDS, but the PLDS burns better DVD-Rs, and both can't write DLs. Edited May 13, 2017 by Apples555
Apples555 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 I just tried burning another DL disc with the GS23N and got a focus servo error at the layer break. I also cleaned the lens. What causes a drive to fail this way?
dbminter Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Generally age. A drive has a limited life span that range anywhere from 5 months to 2 years. It depends on the general quality of the manufacturer, the model in question, and how much it's used before it gives up the ghost. When a drive is dying, it will generally fail to either burn or Verify at the layer change. Dual layer burning is generally the first to go. All other types of media will generally still burn, even on Blu-Ray burners, where BD will continue burning, but DVD DL media won't.
Apples555 Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 (edited) Why is it that only burning suffers? I have decades-old optical drives that read as well as they did new, but now I've had two burners fail. They too seem to have no problem reading, now that I think about it. Also, any suggestions for a new drive? Or does it not matter really (as long as it's not slimline). I just burned a single layer DVD-R that skips all over the place on the 5.25" drive. It's really getting worse by the day. Edited May 14, 2017 by Apples555
dbminter Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Well, about the only way you'll know for sure if the drives needs replacing is to take both and test them in an enclosure or put them in someone else's computer and test them out. As I said, when drives die at writing DVD DL media, they will generally work for all other functions. Reading is not as problematic as writing is, so the laser doesn't have to do as much work. The fact that the drives still read fine does not surprise me. As for suggestions of a new drive, I've only bought Blu-Ray burners since 2012. I don't know anything about the DVD burner market anymore. I would make a general suggestion to avoid LiteOns. They randomly add pauses into DVD Video play back on DVD DL discs that are not layer breaks or layer changes. They don't do them a lot but they will do it randomly. Their BD burner did it more often: 2 out of 3 times. And now LiteOn no longer makes BD burners.
Apples555 Posted May 15, 2017 Author Posted May 15, 2017 I picked up the LG burner I linked to earlier. All is well, verify completes fine and DVDs, even DLs, don't skip at all.
dbminter Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 Yeah, generally with the kind of issues you described, it points to a drive that needs replacing. My issue with LG BD drives is they're not as good a reader drive as I've seen in, say, Pioneer BD's. And though it doesn't matter in your case, LG BD drives are rotten BD DL writers. They support them but I don't use them for that because they tend to fail at the layer change, even brand new ones.
Apples555 Posted May 15, 2017 Author Posted May 15, 2017 (edited) I had no choice, the only two internal DVD drives available new are LG and ASUS. I don't think Pioneer even makes DVD drives anymore. Edited May 15, 2017 by Apples555
dbminter Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 My experience with ASUS was iffy. The first drive I had was a USB BD that I had no issues with. I really liked it, so I had high hopes for their internal BD drive. Absolute junk. Supports writing to rewritable media, but utterly destroyed the DVD+RW and BD-RE SL and DL I threw at it. After writing to them, the discs were trash, unusable. So, you may have dodged a bullet by not going with ASUS.
Apples555 Posted May 15, 2017 Author Posted May 15, 2017 (edited) I've only heard bad things about ASUS, and I don't think they're one of the big optical drive manufacturers. The LG was also cheaper ($15). I have a Goldstar CD drive in a 1997 PC that still reads as well as it did when new, which is why I was surprised the LG drive in my MacBook died like this. Edited May 15, 2017 by Apples555
dbminter Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 The last LG BD burner I had to replace died after 5 months. Yes, you guessed, it stopped Verifying correctly at the layer change on DVD+R DL's. Normally, you get about 9 to 12 months on an LG, but everyone's quality has gone to over the years because they don't care anymore.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 Try putting the write type back to the default value of DAO/SAO. There's no reason to force it to Incremental. Likewise, forcing OPC might not be helping things.
Apples555 Posted June 4, 2017 Author Posted June 4, 2017 (edited) Got a third coaster. I thought OPC's purpose was to make the burn better? I set it to DAO/SAO, disabled OPC and started a fourth burn. Incremental used to work fine. Edited June 4, 2017 by Apples555
dbminter Posted June 4, 2017 Posted June 4, 2017 I think it may be a good idea to try an LG external USB burner. You won't be wasting as much time opening the case and swapping out drives. Plus, it would test if the problem is your SATA cable or SATA connection on the mobo. While it may not be a hardware issue, it could be a software issue involving your SATA. The USB would help to see if that's the case. If you get one, be sure to try and see if you can get a full height drive and not a slim model. They're junk. If necessary, get an internal full height one and buy an enclosure for it. I can't say how well LG DVD burners are because the last time I had one was over 10 years ago and it turned me off to their units. I had a rebadged LG unit from IOMega and it's burns randomly played back with skips and pauses on DVD-R's on the Playstation 2. The only reason I get LG BD burners as they're the only ones that write to Ritek 8x DVD+RW media correctly. And Ritek is the only manufacturer of 8x media that is not crappy CMC Magentics.

Apples555 Posted June 7, 2017 Author Posted June 7, 2017 (edited) After a few more coasters with this image, I noticed that all of them failed on the same VOB. I used DVD Shrink to reauthor the DVD but with compression disabled, so the saved ISO should be identical to the original ISO. I used IMGBurn to build. Everything went fine first try. I've gotten miscompares before on this drive, but only once in a blue moon. This image gets exactly 50 miscompares all in the same file every time. Lightning, is there anything unique about the logs that show something wrong with the image? I can't see anything. Edited June 7, 2017 by Apples555
LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Usually, when a drive is returning empty sectors, it'll do so in ECC sized chunks. So I'd expect the number of miscompares to be a multiple of 16 - unless of course the image file also has empty sectors in it for some of those sectors within said ECC blocks. Take that failed disc and verify it again. Double check that you have the same issue at the exact same sectors. Can I ask you to please right click the drive selection box and pick the 'Family Tree' option. Close the box that pops up and then copy + paste everything from the log window into your next reply.
dbminter Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 I think it just has to be accepted that LG drives may be crap. I just replaced my LG BD burner on April 21st. Already needs replacing. Failing to properly write to BD-R SL, failing at Verify. Last one stopped writing to DVD+R DL after 5 months. And this one stopped writing BD-R SL after a little over a month.
Ch3vr0n Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Can't believe you've got such problems with lg's. Mine have been going strong for years and still burn as if new. Even my old gh22. Sent from my Nexus 6P with Tapatalk
