ASCQ 0x90 errors, but disk appears to be good?

Hi folks,

I'm attempting to make backups of some old software disks, but a few of them are giving me grief. Using the windows file manager I can copy the entire contents of the disk to a folder, so I assume the disk is good. But when I fire up ImgBurn to make an ISO, I get:

Retry Failed - Reason: Unknown (CRC or ECC Error) (ASC: 0x10; ASCQ: 0x90)

I get the same results one 2 different optical drives. Am I running into some kind of weird copy protection or what?

Given it's a game CD of a popular series, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of protection on it.  Yet, if there were, you wouldn't be able to copy over the contents with File/Windows Explorer, I would think.  Unless you need the disc to run the game and the software checks for some kind of unreadable sectors as copy protection like the PS1 did.

Ah but I ripped a whole stack of PS1/PS2 games without issue. I suspect its some form of copy protection, after proceeding with the process it pretty consistently came up on disk 1 of every 2 disk set. Very frustrating for someone who just wants to make backups of things they own.

Oh, wait, this Sims is a PS1 game disc and not a PC game disc?  Then, it's not copy protection.  What you're most likely encountering is a hardware incompatibility.  There are known issues with ImgBurn attempting to read some PS1 discs in some optical drives.  For instance, my Mega Man 8 will not read to an image file with ImgBurn.  However, Alcohol 120% will read it.  So, try using Alcohol 120%.  I believe there's a free version.

Alcohol probably won't help in this case.  I was thinking it was a PS1 Sims game CD, which that would matter.  I said it may be copy protection because, at first, I thought it was a Sims PC game disc, which it is.  And The Sims is a very popular series, which could mean they copy protected it.  But, why you'd be able to copy the contents with File/Windows Explorer if it was protected doesn't make sense, though.  Unless you need the original physical disc to start the game each time.

I think there used to be something called Game Jackal that was designed to copy copy protected PC game discs.

Yeah, Alcohol hasn't helped. Tons of errors. Its gotta be copy protection, I can't believe the disk 1 for half a dozen PC games has gone bad. I'll take a look at game jackal.

EDIT: that doesn't seem to be for ripping disks. Its basically an auto-no-CD system, which I'm sure has it's uses, but is not terribly helpful for my long-term archival project.

I wasn't entirely sure.  Then, it's either Daemon Tools or AnyDVD (Despite its name, I thought it had a copy protected CD reading feature, but that may be for audio CD's,. if such things existed.) that had a feature that could read protected game CD's.  Or maybe CloneCD instead of Game Jackal.
