Hello. I'm getting the following error when I'm trying to burn a Verbatim BD-R DL 50gb media in ImgBurn. Here is the log:

It is quite common for errors to occur at layer breaks of multi-layer media.  The problem is a poor implementation of the write strategy in the firmware.  This can generally only be fixed by updating the firmware or trying a different BD burner that might like those media better.

The easiest and cheapest solution is to first check for a firmware update for your Pioneer.  In Write mode, right click on the Pioneer drive in the drop down list of target devices and choose the last option in the context menu which should say something like Check for firmware updates.

Other than that, I'd try an LG drive like the WH16NS60, which is what I use.  I've never used BD-R DL media, but I have used BD-RE DL from Verbatim in the NS60 for many years.

I'm actually using the latest firmware according to the manufacture's site: https://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00002r_e.html#BDR-212EBK

What other suggestions do you have? Could this happen because I've enabled OPC before write option?

I'm also using the slowest speed possible even though Pioneer BD Drives are regarded as one of the best burners that are today in the market together with LG so I don't understand why. Can OPC option interfere with the write strategy set by the manufacturer?

I don't know about OPC, but you can always try it and see.  Personally, I wouldn't think it would matter in this case, but, as I said, I know nothing about OPC.  If you do disable it and try again, you're only out one disc.

There is one other thing to take into consideration.  What part of the world are you getting these Verbatim in?  Some people in places outside of North America have reported problems with Verbatim BD media.

I intend on trying a Pioneer again pretty soon, but my experience with them is their quality control has gone downhill for years.  The last one I had 2 years ago died within 2 months.  Pioneer sent me a replacement and it, too, died in 2 months, after which they issued me a refund.  However, Pioneer did make the longest lasting BD drive I ever had at 2.5 years, which is an unheard of amount of time in my user experience.  And Pioneer continues to ignore my pleas to fix their firmware issue with old generation Ritek 8x DVD+RW.  Their drives for the past 5 years have incompatible firmware with them, even though they claim to work with them.  Verifies will always fail, but writes and verifies pass in the LG WH16NS60, which is why I've been using it for like 5 years.  The NS40, though cheaper because it doesn't support UltraHD BD, I don't recommend because it does not write properly to BD-RE DL, which means it most likely does not write properly to BD-R DL.  Even though I don't use UltraHD BD, I do use BD-RE DL, so I pay the extra for the NS60 over the NS40.

OPC is the Optimal Power Calibration setting that ImgBurn is using when burning unknown MID's or lower grade media which this isn't the case.

These Verbatim's that I'm using are made in Taiwan and are the ones that are packaged in single jewel cases. They are called Verbatim # 43747 and have VERBAT-IMf-000 as the ID so in principal they should the right stuff. I've also used the 10 pack spindles called # 43746 and in general I've had successful burns, but every now and then I'm getting a coaster even though I'm writing at 2x speed.

For example, this is from another burn that I've made a few weeks ago. Here is the log:

I've never used BD-R DL before, but I do notice that even in that log, the error occurs at the layer change.  People using the apparently good MID for Verbatim BD-R DL in places other than North America have reported problems using that media.  So, it could simply be based on where you are in the world, which is why I asked.  Verbatim uses the same MID across the board for BD, except when they're using CMC.

You could try something other than Verbatim, but you'll most likely just get CMC media, which you won't want.

That is true. Another option would be the MediaRange BD-R DL non-printable which also have the same MID (VERBAT-IMf-000) as these ones. Other than that, I don't know what else to do.

Oh, failed to notice it says what location you're in under your ID.

I would say it's most likely an incompatibility issue with the Pioneer and that media.  You said you got some to work but some not to, which means the solution could be as simple as replacing your Pioneer with a new one.  Bottom line is, I think, you'll need a different BD burner in some capacity in order to fix this issue.  But, trying those MediaRange could solve the problem, and if it does, it's definitely cheaper and easier a solution.

@dbminterI've tried to burn the same folder using another disc and everything was fine until the verification process when at the layer break (53%) the speed dropped suddenly at 2x and stayed there until the end. In the end it says that then burn was successful. Here is the log:

What do you think? Can I consider this a good burn?

If you got a successful Read to an image file without any kind of errors, it is generally a good test that the burn is good.  Not 100%, of course.  A 100% test is if it's a BD Movie disc is to play all of the contents on a disc in a Blu-Ray player and check, but that can take hours.

I am a bit concerned that the read speed dropped to 2x after the layer change.  Generally when read/write speeds suddenly drop, you're about to get a failure.

On the second verification I'm noticing that the speed is only dropping from 8x to 4.6x at the layer change (53%) and decreases gradually to 2.8-2.6x until the verification is complete successfully. So I should consider this a good burn even with this anomaly?

Oh, dropping speeds like that on every even numbered layer (Technically, the first layer is Layer 0, so it's the odd numbered layers, but...) is normal.  The way it works is Layer 0 is read from the inside of the disc to the outside and then Layer 1 is read from the outside of the disc back to the inside since the laser is already at the outer edge.  So, when reading from the outside of the disc to the inside, the read speed gradually decreases.  Not entirely sure why, but it does.  And, if you had triple or quad layer BD, at Layer 2, read speeds would gradually increase again and then at Layer 3, would decrease again.  Going down to 2x is somewhat of a slow read speed for BD, though.

In case of BD-R XL TL the speed at which they're read is always constant at 6x from the beginning to the end of the verification. Funny thing is that I've burnt several of these as well and I've had no problems with them compared to DL media. Maybe it's because that they're made better. Here is an example of BD-R XL TL here:

I've never actually burned TL or XL media.  I just asked LUK once about their verifies and was told it would perform as I stated: Layer 0 - full read speeds, Layer 1 - gradually decreasing speed, Layer 2 - full read speed, Layer 3 - gradually decreasing speed.  So, I have no first hand experience.

I don't recall those speeds being mentioned (specifically the 'full read speeds' bit). The layers are read/burnt inner to outer, outer to inner, inner to outer and outer to inner. Assuming the disc spins at a constant speed, the transfer rate increases as it moves from inner to outer, thus the opposite is true when going from outer to inner.

Drives can opt to adjust the spin speed and maintain a constant transfer rate over the entire disc.

I don't remember the exact context, but I recall asking if Layer 2 would be read with increasing speed since Layer 1 was read with decreasing speed, and then Layer 3 would be read with decreasing speed.  And I believe you said that was the case.  Maybe I'm wrong.

Regarding my first post about the sudden drop of the reading speed from 8x to 2x at the layer break and slow verification after that. Should I consider this a good burn or not?

So far, I've tried several times the verification of the burnt disc and I've got no errors. Maybe it's a Pioneer thing considering that they have this feature built-in called Advanced Quiet Drive or It could be a result of OPC with the power calibration laser strategy that was used during the burn.

Advanced Quiet Drive would result in a constant slower speed.  Not a sudden drop of 4 magnitude.  Did you try performing other manual Verifies on this disc?  Do they all suddenly drop to 2x?  A sudden drop to something like 2x could be a fluke.  On LG DVD burning, if a burn is interrupted on BD due to disk activity, when it resumes, it will be maximum 6x, even if the previous speed before the disk activity was higher.

To get back to your original concern, I wouldn't be worried about it in this case.  While it is annoying to get slower speeds like that, at least there were no read errors.  Were there any Retries?

There were no retries. Everything is in the log. The burn was successful. It's the reading speed at the layer break during verification that got me worried. Here is the log again from my second attempt:
