Pioneer DVD BDR 212

Replaced my original DVD drive with this (was having problems -- could burn a DVD but then it wouldn't verify -- could not see a dvd in drive when starting to verify).

Now have tried several in the new drive. Blu-ray, DVD-R, DVD - double layer.  All of them are getting the following error on verify.  Have tried to find better drivers, but failing. Tried uninstalling the drive and let Windows (10) find one.  This one is from 2006.  Here is my typical log.

Did not realize imgburn.log appends.  so here is two from today. In both cases, I try a couple retries and then cancel.  It seems like the burn is okay.

(Long time IMGBURN user) Attached my burn log here as well.

I would first check for a firmware update to the Pioneer drive.  In Write mode, right click on the Pioneer drive and choose the last option in the context menu for checking for a firmware update.  Apply that if found and see if that helps.

You don't really have an apples to apples comparisons in all of these logs.  You're using both good discs, the MKM's, and trash discs, CMC.  However, you're getting it on good discs, which isn't normal.  CMC errors are WAY too common.  But, NOT on MKM's.

Barring that, I can only recommend trying the LG WH16NS60, if you can find it, which is what I use.  If not, try the WH16NS40, which you can probably still find, but note last time I tried it years ago, it did NOT write properly to double layer BD-R and BD-RE, even though it claims to support them.  Note these two LG drives are BD burners.

Should have noted that I have updated the firmware that I found on a website.  BDR-212V_FW102EU.exe

Looking on the firmware updates from IMGBURN did not find one.

I have another possible firmware.  But have not put that in yet.

Yes, I can return this one and get another.  But would be nicer to figure out the problem.

The BDR-212 is actually a BD burner.  The 212V is not listed on Pioneer's firmware site, but the BDR-2212 has as its latest firmware 1.2.0.005.  And other BDR lines have like 1.04 as opposed to your listed 1.00.  You could try the firmware here:

https://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html#firmware1

Note if the firmware does not support your drive, the firmware update package will not alter your drive as it won't allow anything to happen to it.

I recommended the LG line because it has the least amount of problems with it, and none fatal, except for the NS40 which didn't write to double layer BD media correctly..  Unlike Pioneer drives which for the past 10 years have had unaddressed firmware borks.

As noted in the log, I believe I have the 1.02 firmware installed:

I 14:49:32 Destination Device: [3:0:0] PIONEER BD-RW   BDR-212V 1.02 (G:) (SATA)

I have tried another software, it said it had errors reading (similar to ImgBurn) but did not show what files it had errors on.  I would hate to give up on ImgBurn but maybe buying another new drive will help.  I don't know

Oh, that's my bad.  I was going by the end of the log where it says this:

I 12:04:57 Source Device: [3:0:0] PIONEER BD-RW   BDR-212V 1.00 (G:) (SATA)

I see later on you must have applied the 1.02 update.

Another drive would isolate if it's the Pioneer's problem.  That's why I recommended what I use.  I know they "work" but that only means they "work" for me.  They may not "work" for you.  But, with a baseline, if they don't work for you, then that would probably help isolate if it's something else that is wrong.

WH16NS60 does not appear to be currently available on places I can return it easily.  WH16NS40 seems to be available and someone flashed the WH16NS60 firmware into the WH16NS40.

I live in a very rural area.  Do not have readily available electronics store (ref: Walmart.....ugh)

As I said, the NS60 doesn't seem to be available anywhere.  I couldn't find it on either Amazon.com or NewEgg.com when I last looked, but the NS40 was available on Amazon.com.  Amazon's really good with their return policy.  I recently tried out a Pioneer 213 and had to return it because Pioneer borked the firmware AGAIN!  After a decade of borked DVD+RW firmware, they HAD fixed it on the 213, but BORKED BD-R, DVD+R DL, and CD-R.  The latest firmware fixed all these issues but BORKED DVD+RW again!  Amazon accepted my return with no issues.

So is the NS40 a decent drive?  Yes, we use Amazon because of their return policies and that we have a UPS store quite locally.

(I almost asked you what burner software you use but ....  LOL)😄

Well, I haven't used the NS40 in years.  What made me stop using it was despite it saying it supported double layer BD burning, 9 times out of 10, it fails.  And it wasn't just me.  Others on this board reported similar behavior.  However, in the years since, firmware updates might have addressed this issue.  So, if you're not ever concerned with burning BD-R DL or BD-RE DL, the NS40 was the drive I was using for a long time.

I don't have a need to burn DL BD media anymore now that I've moved from BD-RE to flash drives and USB SSD's.  So, the NS40 would probably meet my needs unless they borked the firmware for other media since, like Pioneer does.

So the Pioneer drive is on its way back to Amazon.

Do you have any opinion on the WH16NS40 vs the WH16NS40k?  I can't find the WH16NS40 vs the WH16NS60 anywhere i feel comfortable from ordering from (yet)

I burn so seldomly.  It seems like the Pioneer and my old original Toshiba/Samsung drive burned properly but wouldn't verify.

From what I can tell, the main difference with the 40k is it's a triple and quad layer supported BD drive.  The NS40 I had was not.  The NS60's selling point is precisely that.  The 40K appeared to be a 4K supported BD drive, which needs to be able to ready triple and quad layer BD.

We will see.  One is on order -- will be here later this week.

Prices I've seen for the NS60 range upwards toward $200 USD.

If you can even get them.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/7608316749240681/ ($194 USD)

BH Photo Video expects them to be in stock middle of June 2023 but will only sell in multiples of 10 ($75 unit price)

And then we have the ebay: LG WH16NS40 Flashed to WH16NS60 Firmware v1.00 4K UHD FRIENDLY MAKEMKV & DVD FAB

Is this  a joke? https://www.provantage.com/lg-electronics-wh16ns60~7LGED052.htm ($976)

Okay, enough searching the internet.

I paid $115 for the last one I got on Amazon.com, back in November of 2021.  So, I my memory was off as to how much I had paid for it last time.

I believe the current prices reflect the state of the market.  That LG has probably discontinued the NS60.  Even LG's Where To Buy page, when you click on it, shows no one selling it.

Unfortunately, if you intend to write to DVD+R DL, that ASUS will fail at the Verify at the layer change.  It needs a firmware update to fix this, which I've TOLD them they need, but they refuse to update it.

Decided to test a DVD+R DL with the ASUS drive.

Was successful.  See attached log.  Ignore first times as I kept opening one of the files which would certainly fail verify.

Here's probably why your burn was successful:

I 12:03:26 Source Media Type: DVD+R DL (Book Type: DVD-ROM) (Disc ID: MKM-001-00)

You were using the 2.4x speed discs.  I was using the 8x discs.  Disc ID: MKM-003-00.
