LIGHTNING UK!
You're using discs that the drive doesn't like/support. A firmware update may fix that if you can find one. As you seem to be burning double layer discs, ensure you're using Verbatim DVD+R DL's. The others are useless in comparison.

Thanks for the note: I'm using Datawrite DVD+R DL.....I will purcahse some Verbatim and give it go. that might explain why sometimes it does not even reconise that there is a disk in the drive...but others it does (then fails to burn...) where would one go for a firmware update? what is it exactly (new driver?) Thanks H
LIGHTNING UK!
A drives firmware is like the 'operating system' for it. It controls what the drive can and cannot do. Go here and download PYS3 http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2295 Install that and then try again.

dontasciime
And yet i have the liteon version 160P6S and its very good, not one failed burn from over 400+ disc's this assumes you are correct in saying your drive is SONY DW-Q120A.. You could cross flash it to the same as mine a liteon 160P6S i have uploaded the files you need, this would be at your own risk though. http://rapidshare.com/files/14865940/160P6S.rar.html
