I know I'm using crappy media and a crappy burner [i'm working on fixing both], but if someone could take a look at the log and Filter Driver Load Order to let me know if there is some other reason I can't finalize my burns.

I ditched the filters.

I very much doubt that'll fix the issue though. Looks just like a drive/firmware/media issue to me - but then you already know the drive is about 20 years old!

I figured out I was trying to burn too fast. I slowed my burn down to 2x and tried again. Here's the log:

I know my burner is old and crappy [source Device: [1:0:0] HP DVD Writer 300n 3.20 (G:) (ATA)], but my media isn't as bad as I thought--it's 2nd class RICOHJPN-R00-01, and the vos database indicates a 93.5% success rate out of 12,800 samples.

Beside upgrading to Taiyo Yudens and investing in a new burner, is there anything else going wrong here? Shouldn't I be able to get a decent burn rate on this media even with the old burner?

I think your best option would be to get a new drive.

Any recommendations?

It seems LiteON, Plextor, and Pioneer are top choices, yes? Is BenQ a drive? Is lightscribe useful?

[edit]Also, for media, -R is better than +R? Does DL work as well as SL? Any compatibility issues with DL?[edit]

Try speeding it up a bit!

These days it's more about OVERspeeding and getting a great burn than burning as slow as possible.

You might also like to mess around with the drives 'Advanced Settings'.

i.e. Turn Force/Online Hypertuning on.

I 03:23:38 Advanced Settings - Force HT: No, Online HT: No, OverSpeed: No, SmartBurn: Yes

Success and at lightning speed! Thank you all so much for your help and patience. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I delve into more advanced and refined burns, but I can at least get basic burns of .avi files to DVD player playable discs now. [it wasn't much good to me to be backing up my DVDs if I couldn't make usable discs from my backup files.]

And thanks so much for ImgBurn--it's overwhelmingly generous to give such a spectacular program to the world for free. Keep up the great work!
