ImgBurn killing optical disk

I have read all the material on this website, and have not seen specific problem I am having, so posting to forum. When using ImgBurn, my NEC 3540A drive gets "killed" on the first attempt to write a disc from an ISO image. While writing lead-in or just after, get 3 failures (shown in log below) and drive is powered down at this point. ImgBurn program will continue to run so must reboot machine at this point to kill ImgBurn and recover drive. After that, the next disc burned works correctly. This has happened 5 times already. The NEC drive burns without incident using programs such as Nero, DVDShrink, and DVD Flick. I am using Verbatim DVD-R media with Manufacturer ID MCC 02RG20 (shown in data from disc info window) and burning at 2X speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is currently taking 2 discs for every 1 burned.

Thanks!

HELP!!! I have done all that has been suggested, but still having same problem. So far I have verified IDE cable is 80-wire, updated firmware on my NEC 3540A drive to 1.04, verfiied DMA mode was set correctly, and installed latest chipset drivers on my motherboard (Intel i865).

My burns continue to fail as shown in the attached log below. At this point, I cannot exit ImgBurn or eject the disc without rebooting computer. Can anyone help with this issue?

Thanks for suggestion! I was a little hesitant at first as coaster stack is getting tall, but first attempt at 8X burned and played well. Will re-post if issue occurs again.

Many sources I read stated it was better to burn at very slow speed (generally 2X) for better quality burn. However, a few other references state that optimal burn speed varies by drive type. Does anyone know what the real answer is and how to find optimal speed for your drive (assuming that is true)?
