Problem with burning DVDs

Hi, I'm sorry if this may sound like a stupid question, but I have a really bothering problem with burning DVDs. This error happens to me whenever I try to burn something with a new burner (Pioneer 111D) I recently bought. The last time I tried is with a Wii game - which, by the way, I actually own, if you're wondering, and was trying to burn just for testing, since I didn't want to waste any more Double Layers on this one (I've already had to throw away about four or five). Well, anyway, here's the log.

I 17:29:22 ImgBurn Version 2.4.3.0 started!

I 17:29:22 Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3)

I 17:29:22 Total Physical Memory: 3,013,836 KB - Available: 1,952,072 KB

I 17:29:22 Initialising SPTI...

I 17:29:22 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...

I 17:29:23 Found 1 DVD

I have tried using two different USB cables, and also using it on different ports (ports which have always worked perfectly), but still nothing.

The fact is I do not have an enclosure... it didn't come with the adapter, and I thought it wasn't necessary, but apparently it is.

Uhm, this probably sounds even more stupid a question than the first one, but... what difference does an enclosure make? Isn't it just a cover for the DVD, or is it necessary for compatibility?

Every enclosure / all-in-one cable could be using a different chipset (for the usb->ide conversion). The cables are normally cheap and hence are likely to have cheapo chipsets in them.

Whatever chipset is in your cable, the drive/machine doesn't like it.

I believe there are threads on the cdfreaks forum that talk about enclosures that actually work properly.

Thanks for the link. :)

Unfortunately I can't update the firmware, it appears. I've downloaded the files and run the installer, but this is what I obtain:

/// ODD Firmware Update Utility Ver2.37A

Start updating the device No.1.

Current Revision>> PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D 1.23 06/05/11

Current Signature = GENERAL

Now updating the firmware.

Please do not turn off the power and do not reset the pc.

Processing 100% --> Data transfer complete

Now internal re-flashing...

New Revision >> PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111 0000 06/01/05

And then a window pops up saying: "Failed to move to the normal mode. Do you retry to update?". I clicked yes, and the same sequence as above happened (except now the Current Revision was the same as the New Revision), and then it asked me again.

I'm afraid I do not have another computer I can use, though...

And thanks, I'll check the CDFreaks forums. :)

P.S. Another update... on the third try, it successfully updated the firmware. So, ignore the previous message about the errors. :)

It's probable that the drive didn't want to be updated via the USB port. It's one of the downsides of having an external drive. If you have problems updating your firmware in the future, pull the drive out and attach it to an IDE or SATA channel. It'll be alot happier.
