MB821 Posted April 7, 2009 Share Posted April 7, 2009 I've searched through the forums here and over at videohelp.com and haven't seen any similar posts, my apologies if I missed something. So after taking a few years off from DL burning due to the massive number of coasters I was making, I decided to try it again to make a back-up of one of my dvds whose main title was so large that it had to be compressed to 60% to fit on a dvd-r (and this was just the title, none of the menus or anything else, I re-authored it using DVD Shrink to only have the main title, and it was still huge), plus I've got a new Vaio laptop that I picked up in february, so I was hoping to have better results, now that a few years have passed since my initial attempts. I started at videohelp.com, looking through the guides and forums, and came to the conclusion that I needed to get ImgBurn (I've previously used DVD Decryptor on older machines, so I was somewhat familiar with it), so I came over here and started looking through the guides. I knew I needed to make an ISO to burn to the dvd (that's what I've done in the past for single layer dvds), so I looked through the guides and found this: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1777 . I read through it, and realized that, instead of making an ISO from DVD Shrink, I should output it to files instead. So I loaded the disc in DVD Shrink, turned off all compression, and backed up the disc to output files (dvd_folder/VIDEO_TS). I then followed that guide and used ImgBurn to create an ISO and select the layer break. I went to burn the dvd, selecting the MDS file, and sure enough, right when it got to the layer break, it popped up an error and writing failed. MB821 Posted April 8, 2009 Author Share Posted April 8, 2009 Try with the recommended media as Dialysis1 said and it should work Yeah, I've seen the recommendation to use Verbatim a lot of places on both forums, and realized earlier tonight that the "Memorex" dvds I bought were Ritek dvds that were re-branded as Memorex, and therefore crap. That just sucks. So much for brand names being reliable. So - any idea if the Verbatim dvds are actually made by Verbatim, or did they re-brand another dvd as well, except in this case, they picked a good dvd to re-brand? I'm just asking for curiousity's sake. The consensus seems to be that they're the best ones out there, so I'll be getting those eventually. Two of the common recommended Media ID's for Verbatim discs are MCC (single layer) and MKM (double layer)... Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co (MKM) is part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) group of companies and is the parent company of Verbatim so you could say they have a close relationship. As blutach said though, there seems to be a consensus that the made in India ones are not up to the same standard as discs from the Singapore plant. Verbatim also use some other MID's including TY (very good) and many of their CD's are manufactured by CMC (average).
