Thanks Cynthia, I picked up the Sony and it's working great. Firmware HQ is also great. Should this drive handle the DVD DL 8x Verbatim? Can you burn them faster than that? What speed should I burn DVD DL 2.4x Verbatim at?

is there one you can recommend off newegg?

Tried installing everything I could, which was only one of the chipset drivers (nothing else supported). Another failure at 4x 2% in. The disc was spinning as fast as it goes even after imgburn terminated the burn. This Windows is not in beta. I have used the same hardware in Vista maybe 100 times without failure. A couple times, I will try again. No and this is what I was thinking. Have an ASUS P5E-VM HDMI board (Intel chipset) -- I cannot find Windows 7 chipset software anywhere. I would have gone with what's there for Vista, but then I remembered I never did this with any of the Win7 betas and never ran into this problem. Guess I'll do it anyway and see what happens.

Win7 x64 RTM all updates LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1L BL06 (latest firmware) ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 & 2.4.4.0 6th Verbatim DVD+R DL failed now, has been happening at either 0% or 10% of the overall progress. Discs are rated at 2.4x which is what I'm burning them at. Never had this problem before yesterday. I will say I had one success after the 2nd failure, the rest are all failures.
