Thanks for the reply. While updating the firmware, my laptop crashed and, as you might guess, the writer is now unresponsive. My laptop just doesn't notice a new device being plugged in (no changes in My Computer or Device Manager. The dvd tray doesn't open anymore when pushed on the button. The only thing that says that it's connected is the light from the SATA-USB converter. Is there any way to spark some life back into the writer??
