    More Samsung SH-S203B Poblems

No- not running in RAID. I am planning on possibly running in RAID in future. The funny thing is, that if you try and boot vista64/XP/etc (at least on this bios) you either have to install using ATA configuration or AHCI, and once installed if you change it back you get blue screened on boot up (in other words you have to re-install. It did this to me after I installed it under ATA (main) Bios, and then tried to turn on AHCI+NCQ. So before I added all the programs/etc (like imgburn ) I decided to format/reinstall using AHCI (in case I needed it in the furture.) I also wanted NCQ to use eSATA bracket at some point. (Have to use AHCI bios for that.) My point is I would rather get it working like it is. Sounds like I shouldn't have a problem reverting back, actually. And it sounds to me that to avoid BSOD (when switching on secondary bios, you just need to boot up with regular bios and install AHCI/SATA drivers, then turn AHCI bios on and reboot into OS. But I have seen(read) differing opinions/results doing this under Vista. refs: WikiPedia (AHCI)-See Problems (Microsoft) near top. Vista Fix?

Many thanks! I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled. That driver listed on GB site is not that version. Or more to the point it installs v 8.3.0.1016. Or maybe Vista has me beat? ha. I swear I installed it correctly. I had to reboot. I uninstalled the driver file as well as deleted it. And Vista came back up with generic sata controllers. Then I installed the driver. Strange. Maybe I will try the one on intel site. Thanks again. There is one file I found with a version matching the file listing (plus the readme's version info says 8.3.1.1011.):

Thanks for the heads up. I installed that. Somehow I think Vista thinks it knows best and installed a "Vista" driver through update? (I seem to recall this.) I will update it again!

I am running AHCI "seconday" BIOS on a gigabyte board eP35-DS3R. SO that may be it, but (no) that post above doesn't really apply.

Who suggested that?! Make it look like Vista again or none of the Vista 'tweaks' will be visible. Don't remember where I saw that post. I was having other issues when I first installed and I remember "Running as Admin + XP Comp." as being possible fixes... It's set it back.

Yep, I set AUTO media type at 16x. Failed @ 99%. Ug. Then set media to 12x. Burned finished. (Verifying as I type this.) I know this has probably been posted a number of times, but what is a good dependable media to use with this drive that will at least support approx 16x? Also, not that I doubt you, but if BookType is set, why does it fail when trying to set it manually? Thanks so much for quick response mmalves! Ok verify is done. BTW I am using Vista 64bit (Ultimate.) Just have compatibility mode set for this program as per others suggestions: I 10:49:47 ImgBurn Version 2.4.1.0 started! More Samsung SH-S203B Poblems

I have a Samsung SH-S203B (FW:SB02) (Don't see SB03 on rpc1 site?). I have gotten disks to work, but again setting the booktype "manually" returns a "Unknown (Failed!)". So knowing this, it makes sense that media isn't playing on some stand alones. I have searched and found links to the newer firmware, but strictly speaking Samsung site still lists SB02 as newest. I think I download SB03 from softpedia, so this is okay to use on mine? Did this correct your set booktype function? I have write fails at around 75% (14x +-) of disk write. Usually (DVD movie burns specifically) so I think maybe it is just trying to burn at too high a rate for media? Don't have a log right now..forgot to save. (damn and already have two coasters... I do have DVDInfo image. Thanks.
  10. Funny that you say that. I just switched it a minute ago to SPTI and all is well (burned at 8.2x most of the way)! @LIGHTNING UK!: Ya, I figured, actually during the write I mentioned above(in *this msg* ^ not the one that slowed down to 6x), at first the image buffer fluctuated quite a bit (all above 80% though) then after 1/2 way through the burn it 'stabilized' at 99%+. SO there you go. Hopefully this is working right now. I am happy.. - Thanks for the quick reply (to both of you)!
  11. I am also having the same prob.. Haven't tried other media but these are "Maxell DVD-R" "6x 8x 12x 16x" (supposedly). My drive should be capable of 8x? I get the hard drive problem 1-5 times. (It throttles back like it is suppose too, but I don't understand why it would have to do this?) (SATA Drive 60MB+ Rsec) (No other running programs.. I looked with Process Explorer during one burn). My buffer was 40MB this time.. same problem but it only throttled back once(!) Oh ya, once it throttles the speed back shouldn't it try and go back up to 8x again? (It always stays at 6x - with this media at least...) This is what bothers me the most.. or is it suppose to do this. Well overall I am very happy with your software. Thanks ahead of time! BTW I just remembered. Maybe it is the media, as I recall I haven't really tried to burn at 8x until recently. I never noticed this problem (and my buffer use to be 20mb, too!) So dunno....?
