  1. I first want to again thank the folks who tried to help with my dieing Sony burner. It was given a proper funeral and now a new drive it working with all the various media I couldn't get the old drive to use. But I have noticed a problem upstairs where my big TV and two dvd players are. My genreal use player has lots of problems displaying any burned disc. It will play fine for 10 or 20 minutes but then I start getting digital blocks over parts of the screen and the frame rate slowly drops til there is almost no movement. But then I take the same disc in my older floor model sample player that also has a burner option which I use to copy some tv shows off of a DVR.(Dish NEtwork's version of Tivo) The burner/player is more cumbersome to use but it plays the disc brillantly. So my question is... Are burner/player decks more compatible with burnt DVDs or is it just my dedicated player drive is not healthy either? thanks dave henrie

Yep. We'll need a log showing failures with the Verbatim media when you get one. In the meantime, toss these CMC disks into the bin. They aren't worth the frustration, time or effort to bother using. They are that bad. Well for what it is worth, my son recently installed a newer Sony DVD the DRU 830 and when I put the verbatium disc in that with nero 7(all he had on his box) the disc was recognized and the burning process took off perfectly. I guess...I'll have to swallow hard and accept that even tho the hours on this drive fall far far far far short of the MTF, this drive is toast. I may keep it around as a player at least and a cdburner....grmble grumble....gnash...gnash... Thanks everyone Dave Henrie

This is cut from the Nero log, I'm 99% this was the TDK media and not Verbatium...I don't think I've gotten a Verb to load yet...Will keep trying... This may or may not make sense, since it IS from another product. dh Media Type: 0, Layer: 0, Address: 0 (0 h), AGID: 0; Length: 2050 [04:28:59] DVDEngine Book Type: DVD+R (10), Part Version: 1.0x (1) [04:28:59] DVDEngine Disc Size: 120 mm, Maximum Rate: <not specified> (F h) [04:28:59] DVDEngine Number of Layers: 1, Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP), Layer Type: recordable [04:28:59] DVDEngine Linear Density: 0,267 um/bit, Track Density: 0,74 um/track [04:28:59] DVDEngine Starting Physical Sector Number of Data Area: 30000 h (DVD-ROM, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW) [04:28:59] DVDEngine End Physical Sector Number of Data Area: 26053F h [04:28:59] DVDEngine End Sector Number in Layer 0: 0 h (LBN: FFFD0000 h, 4193920 MB) [04:28:59] DVDEngine Data in Burst Cutting Area (BCA) does not exist [04:28:59] DVDEngine Disc Application Code: 0 / 0 h [04:28:59] DVDEngine Extended Information indicators: 7 h [04:28:59] DVDEngine Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC.MAG. oh sorry, not much of a log appears since the status line still indicates: "device not ready: Medium not present." here is what there is of the log with a Verb disc in the drive. And the error portion only came near the end of the log. dh

several logs listed above. about the 4th message, my second, in the thread. I have only gotten the drive to 'see' the disc once this past week. And that wasn't enough to get to the burn process. I got a Power Calibration Error that time. Every other time, the message at the bottom of the IMGburn display was Media Not Present. Tried Verbatium, TDK, two different Generiics, The Verbatium disc was -R the rest were +R. I may have to admit defeat. Un-installed IE7 and WMP11 as well. dh

  11. I have recently begun having problems using my SonyDRU-710a. The drive will not acknowledge that a blank dvd disc has been inserted. I have updated the drive's firmware, I have searched for virus'. I have installed NEro's and Adaptec's ASPI and none of that has helped. I have tried 3 different brands of DVD + R medium, I have un-installed and re-installed the drive. Nothing has helped. The drive plays DVD commercial movies just fine. So to double check the DVD media, I took a disc to my wife's fairly new Dell laptop and that too would not acknowledge that a blank disc had been inserted. I have read a half dozen tech sites this past few days and none of the solutions have helped. One I haven't tried yet was to un-install IE 7 and WMP 11. Both of our machines are SP2 XP and have IE7 and WMP 11 installed. I also have some gaming software that I 'thought' might have copy protection that was interfering with my drive, but since my wife's laptop does not have any Starforce or Sony CP on it...I guess that cannot be a cause. here is my imgburn log. I 22:50:05 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started!
