  1. I bought the 80 conductor cable, plugged it into the master drive only (my dvd+-rw), enabled DMA on that drive and everythings working great again . Thanks chewy! Btw, what does DMA mean anyways? Also, I too am curious as to why I should only have the ribbon plugged into one drive.
  2. Thanks for the help chewy. So how would I go about doing the above? Sorry but my knowledge of things of this sort is limited. Running to the store to pick up the cable now..
  3. Actually I just counted the wires on the conductor cable and it turns out its a 40, not an 80. Would that be the problem? Is my burner permanently damaged from using the 40?
  4. Okay well after having many problems backing up my dvds and using the advice given from you guys on this site, I replaced my burner with a Pioneer 112D drive and purchased two 20 packs of Verbatim DVD+R DL's (as some of you may already know). Everything was working fine until one day everything just went to sh** (which is the exact same thing that happened with my last burner/media combination ). I burned a good 8 back-ups before I started receiving the error messages. Some of them are mid-burn, others are during finalization or verification. I've wasted 6 or 7 Verbatims trying to fix this problem, which I am not so happy about . What is going on?! I even reformated my computer to make sure it wasn't because of some sort of virus or bug. Here is the log from my last burn: I 14:59:17 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started! 5. Okay so what I am ultimately trying to do is dub songs over various scenes from several movies. These movies were video cassettes which I recorded onto DVD's. So now I have them on DVD and I assume I need to somehow convert them to AVI so I can open them up in windows movie maker and get to work. The problem is I can't figure out how to do this (for free at least) and I'm not even sure if this is the best way to achieve my goal. Please offer any suggestions or advice you may have. Thanks!
  6. Hey guys, I'm going to be backing up a 2-disc season of a TV show with multiple episodes on each disc and this is something I have never done before. Is there anything special I need to do to burn this? The reason I am asking is because I have wasted so many of my DL's in the past, I am afraid to try something new. Please let me know if the process is just the exact same as it would be with every other dual layer dvd. Do I still need to select the point where it jumps from the first layer to the second? Please offer any suggestions or advice you may have. Thanks!
  7. I cannot believe that after what everyone here as told you, you think that the discs you are using are good. Just because you have been lucky and had good burns does not mean the discs will be any good next year (or even tomorrow). None of us are telling you to get Verbatim discs because we own the company. We're telling you because of all of the knowledge we've gained over the years through use and testing of the discs. You have to do as you see fit. Just don't say we didn't warn you. Well actually I purchased Verbatims and the Matrix ones were the only ones that I was able to successfully burn. They still have great playback. But yea, I bought a new burner today (a Pioneer 112D, thanks to the suggestions in another post) and I haven't had any problems since so I guess the problem was with my old one. I think it just died on me, so do you think it was because I was working it too hard? I had it burning stuff all day and I left it to burn something overnight and I think that was the last time it worked. I dont want this to happen to my new one! Btw thanks for all the help I've received over the past few days guys, it feels so good when things just work .
  8. if that was the case then everyone using it would be experiencing the same problem sorry, you're probably right, but do you think its the burner or something else?
  9. Pasted below is the log, and attached is a picture of the error box I am receiving. This is with Verbatims !! I find it very hard to believe that the problem isn't with ImgBurn itself, because burning was working great a few days ago with consistent burns so I highly doubt it is a problem with the drive or media no matter how much you tell me otherwise. It just magically stopped working and decided to become a coaster dispenser. Has anyone experienced that? Well I think I'm going to go pick up a new burner today (Pioneer DVR-112D if they have it), but I won't open the packaging until I get some closure on what the actual culprit is because after I buy this drive I'm about broke. 10. Okay, I've made about ten coasters in the past two days with three different brands of DVD+R DL's, and I am getting fed up with it. Things we're going very smoothly for a while, I made 4 or 5 good backups with no problems, and then all hell let loose. ImgBurn just magically started giving me these error messages either at the beginning or halfway through, and I've lost a lot of money. I just want to buy a new burner because it seems likely that the problem is with that since it is old, and the most current firmware for it is from 2005. Can someone please offer some suggestions. What works for you? I just want a RELIABLE burner that will burn just about any brand of DL media (particularly Sony, Memorex, and Matrix so I can finish up the rest of the blank DVD's that I have ), but I'm not looking to spend over $100. I just want one that will consistently burn DL movies because that's pretty much all I will be using it for, except for the occassional audio cd.
  11. So are you saying the Verbatims wouldn't even work with my setup? And the Sony ones say they were made in Taiwan. They don't have the MKM code, although I'm not even really sure where to look. I guess I'll just try to sell whats left of them on eBay if I can't get my money back.
  12. Well, I just went back to the Matrix's and they are working fine. So I guess now I'll just wait until those are used up and then I'll buy me some Verbatims , no matter how expensive they are (btw, any advice on where to get these for the best price?). Hopefully Fry's will believe me when I go in tomorrow with the Sony's and say they were defective too haha.
  13. I am currently using cheap no-name brand media (Matrix DVD+R DL's) which have given me no problems in the writing process, except for maybe a slight quality issue in playback. So I purchased a 15 pack of Memorex DVD+R DL's hoping that I could get the maximum quality out of my favorite movies. Unfortunately they didn't have Verbatim at the store I was at (Fry's, which has EVERYTHING). At the beginning of the writing process the error message I attached in this post was given to me, and twice, with two different movies. I returned the DL's to the store saying they were defective and luckily I was able to get my money back. I decided to purchase the more expensive Sony DVD+R DL's there figuring there would be no way I would have any problems with these, but they had the exact same result! What is going on?? Anyone experienced this or have any ideas of what the problem could be? My firmware is up to date. error.bmp
  14. Okay I have some good news. I updated my firmware on the Dell website and everything works fine now. The Matrix brand DL discs work great and I've already burned 4 back-ups with no problems (in writing or playback). I would definitely recommend this brand, especially since a 25 pack only costs about $25. I have one more question though. Is the "verify" option neccessary? What exactly does this do? I'm going to be backing up a lot of DVDs these next few days and eliminating this "verification" process would almost cut the burning time in half.
  15. I've been browsing the site and figure it could have something to do with my "firmware," whatever that is. The burner I have is the Philips DVD+-RW DVD8631 that came with my Dell desktop that I purchased some 3 years ago. ImgBurn does say that my drive is capable of writing DVD+R DL, but you guys make it sound like the firmware may be the problem. Do you think it could solely be the fact that I didn't buy Verbatims? I would prefer to try everything else before buying more DL's because of how expensive they are. I could not find anywhere on this forum or on google explaining how to update firmware or what it is exactly, so could someone please help? Thanks - Michael
  16. Okay so I just got my 25 pack of Matrix DVD+R DL's in the mail today and began trying to make back-ups of my dvd's using DVDFab to rip and ImgBurn to write. I followed the instructions exactly from the guide provided in this forum. About halfway through the burning process, it would stop and the log would say this: I 16:11:23 Writing LeadIn... I 16:11:35 Writing Image... (LBA: 0 - 3641695) I 16:11:35 Writing Layer 0... (LBA: 0 - 1820847) I 16:30:44 Writing Layer 1... (LBA: 1820848 - 3641695) W 16:31:19 Failed to Write Sectors 1821168 - 1821199 - Write Error W 16:31:19 Retrying (1 of 20)... I've already made two coasters with two different movies, and I dont want to waste any more of these precious discs. Any ideas of what the problem could be??
