Can't burn DVD image on MATSHITA BD-RE UJ-220

I've installed ImgBurn as I've got completely tired of Roxio Creator, but unfortunately, the first disc image I want to burn doesn't work.

I also get an application error window appear that has a scsi error of 0x02 - check condition - whatever that means.

Here is the log:

Your burner doesn't like the blanks you're using. You could try burning at 2.4x, but it would be better if you used Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blanks.

Nah, its not the media, I get perfect burns at 4x with Roxio and it also works at 4x with MagicISO and Vista's own burning feature.

I burnt the image with MagicISO using the same disc as ImgBurn refused to write to and it worked OK.

I suspect ImgBurn doesn't understand the responses from the drive. I suppose its a question of waiting for the drive to be added - might be a long wait as there probably weren't that many people taking up the £500 premium for BD-RE on their XPS...

Drives are supposed to follow the MMC specs, I don't have to 'understand' individual ones.

W 00:57:51 Failed to Write Sectors 3712 - 3743 - Reason: Unknown (ASC: 0x09, ASCQ: 0x90)

Your drive is reporting the error, not ImgBurn.

You can see from here - http://www.t10.org/lists/asc-num.txt - that ASC 0x09 is something along these lines. ASC-Q 0x90 is a Vendor Unique code and so doesn't appear in the list.

8x media showing up as 4x is never a good sign. Either the firmware is intentionally limiting the drive to 4x because the media is crap or the MID isn't in the firmware at all and the drive is using some default (useless) write strategy for it.

I bet if you actually tried some *decent* other discs that it would work just fine.

No, not ImgBurn... your drive.

All I do is feed it with data.

The drive obviously doesn't like the 'PRODISC-R03-03' dye much and that's why it errors out.

Now there's a chance you could adjust the settings away from their default values and it might start working - but in all honesty, you shouldn't have to if the drive/firmware/media combo worked properly in the first place.

Try playing with the 'Write Type' setting and put it on 'Incremental' rather than 'DAO/SAO'. You could also try the 'DVD+R Reserve Track' one, and maybe even 'Perform OPC'.

I still don't understand why Vista, Roxio and MagicISO burn these "DataWrite" discs without problem?

I assume they must parse the results from the drive and do something else to make the drive work.

Thanks for your help though, when I'm buying discs in future, it'll be Verbatim.

They must not be getting the error from the drive, that's all. (Like how ImgBurn didn't get it when you used the decent media)

The settings I mentioned to change can get around certain issues that certain drives have. Perhaps those other program use them by default, I really don't know. Changing them shouldn't make any difference to a decent drive with decent firmware, but sometimes they just do.

The way I have the settings configured by default works best for most drives. Changing them will make it mess up for a lot more drives than it fixes things for.
