ISO to DVD?

How do I burn an ISO file, so I can play it on the DVD player?
Does it have to be converted to a DVD file first, and if so, what app does it?

How about mp4 files? I just made myself a nice coaster by burning an mp4 movie which says "no play" on my DVD player! (Although my W7 system offered to "burn to CD" which "can be played on any DVD player and on most computers") Yeah, right!
