  1. HELP! More than 30 minutes ago I initiated an attempt to burn an iso image to a DVD and was asked to format it. I said yes, and the process started normally. However, within 5 minutes, it reached 11% (erasing disk) and has not budged from there since. When I try to close the program, it tells me "Sorry, you cannot cancel this operation." Further, I am unable to open the DVD tray. What should I do? Should I shut down my machine? Please help.

  2. The suggestion in post #22 seems to be your only option. I couldn't find any later/different firmware for that drive.

Option 2 if the above doesn't work is to get a nice external drive.

Sometimes it works if you select another of the supported write speeds. Might also be that the quality of those cd's are not the best.

    (Speeds: 8x, 12x, 16x, 24x)

Although I've tried everything except buying an external drive, no such luck! So I think I'll just give it up for now and keep my fingers crossed that I won't need the bootable recovery disk I've been trying to create for more than a week. But mucho thanks to all for your help and patience.

  3. There are many firmwares that works on several drives in the same model series.

This one seems to be one of those.

apparently this 1.61 UJ-850U firmware works also on the UJ-850S

Well, I gave it a shot and was told that the 1.61 UJ-850U did not apply to my device. Now what?

  4. You have this

    MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S 1.50

and the update is for that drive.

Just make sure that you have no disc in the drive and all other programs closed down while you flash it.

    :)

Yes...I know what I have currently. But my problem is that I cannot find an update specifically for UJ-850s. Yikes!

  5. The right firmware, if there's any, should be available in the Support section of your laptop manufacturer's website.

That's where I looked in the first place, but the only drivers listed are for:

    Chipset Intel

    Audio Conexant

    Bluetooth Broadcom

    Camera Bison

    Camera Logitech

    CardReader TI

    Lan Realtek

    Modem Agere

    TouchPad Synaptics

    VGA ATI

    VGA Intel

Is the CD-DVD included somewhere in one of those?

I'm afraid I'm too freaked out by all the warnings I get about what terrible damage I can do to my computer by "flashing the wrong driver upgrade" to feel confident with your use of the word "apparently." Is there anyway you can explain how you came to that conclusion? I'm really at the end of my rope here as it is clear that there is no upgrade for the UJ-850s...my version.

  7. Post the whole log of that burn (previous logs can be found in ImgBurn's Help menu). As for the locking problem look in the FAQ.

Presuming you're referring to "W 18:19:19 DeviceIoControl(IOCTL_CDROM_EXCLUSIVE_ACCESS, Lock, 1) Not Supported! - Reason: Incorrect function." as the locking problem, I'm having trouble finding anything about it in FAQ. What keywords do you suggest that I search?

Try a slower write speed (Speeds: 8x, 12x, 16x, 24x) and/or try some different discs... your current ones are using a Ritek dye (97m15s17f).

Almost made it...but no cigar! I reduced the speed to 8x and got all the way to 100% before getting a "close tray" error saying it was normal on laptops and to close the tray manually. However, when I did, I got a fail message so what do I do now?
