Googling on "Multi-Word DMA Mode 2" led me to this solution. Basically there is a problem with some new DVD drives connecting to old MSI boards on the second IDE channel as it only supports DMA4 for HDDs. I switched the DVD drive to the primary IDE channel and now get transfer mode UDMA4. I'm much obliged for taking the time out to point me in the right direction. Of course, since I put the DVD drive back into the tower the motherboard fails to recognise it at all! Sod's Law in action. Where's that axe?

In sheer desperation I switched the IDE controller to PIO mode, and would you believe I can now burn. Unfortunately only at max 1.2x and throwing hardware interrupts all over the place, but burns complete successfully never the less. Go figure. To celebrate, I'm off to microwave my coasters. Any thoughts on wtf is going on here would be much appreciated!

OK tried that, no joy. Only other thing I can add is that the problem also happens in test mode. I agree this is not your problem, I have spent a few evenings trying to resolve this on Google which is how I ended up here. I was really hoping that someone might recognise the symptom of other applications starting but GUIs not appearing, combined with the slow write speeds. Oh well thanks for having a look, I'll post back if I solve this before it sends me mad. Cheers, Mike.

Yes I tried the DMA fix already, and reinstalled the IDE controller just in case. The controller is "NVIDIA NForce MCP2 IDE Controller" Thanks, Mike.

I've been using ImgBurn for a couple of years, its been excellent and life is better without Nero. However I've recently had system problems which I narrowed down to my old DVD writer. I replaced it with an LG GH22NP20 for which I have the latest firmware (1.04). Some info about the problem: I can read from the drive but not write. Writing is tediously slow (0.0x) though will eventually complete successfully... but nothing has been written to the disk. While writing, if I start another app. its GUI does not appear until I have cancelled my burn. I have tried the drive on a different PC and it writes fine with ImgBurn. I have tried re-installing ImgBurn. I have tried other burners (Ashampoo and CDBurnerXP) with the exactly same results (including other apps hanging). I've uninstalled the IDE channels. I've tried using a different IDE cable. I've checked for current transfer mode (its "Multi-Word DMA Mode 2") and uninstalled the IDE controller just in case. btw I'm running XP Pro on an MSI K7N2 Delta-L with latest BIOS. SO I know that technically this is not an ImgBurn issue but I'm at a dead end. Seems to me like the others apps hanging indicates system deadlock caused while writing but this isn't my area of expertise. The fact it works on another PC makes me think I'll end up doing a scratch install... only a couple of months since the last one Any help much appreciated. Even some software that will help me work out what this system lock issue is all about.
