if i get VERBATIM 2.4 will i be able to burn at 2.4 or do i need a new drive

i tried 2,3,4 im buying the write dvd'd when i get the money my dvd drive has a update but when i try to do it it says not compatible even though it the write one

is htere a way to fix that
