I am just clicking on the file which is an ISO file. Should I be playing it back through a virtual drive?

I am backing up my DVD's. When I copy a standard DVD, a mds file is created. That file is not created when I am creating a BluRay backup and I can't playback the file. Please advise bagadonuts
