Strange - I could have sworn I set it to x3 speed. I will get myself a cleaning cd and then try again. Strangely, the burn seems to work fine though. Thanks for all the help so far - I'll get the drive cleaned, and then report back in case it doesnt work.

You know, right after I posted this, I checked the current disc, and I could see scratches on it. Im trying with another right now though to see if there's any difference. I've tried with a few different ones the last few weeks though, so it would be...well, not good if every disc I had was faulty due to scratches.
