Thanks for the reply. I just bought some new verbatim media, DVD-R, the shiny silver ones. I thought they were all made in Japan, but these were made in Taiwan, so don't know if that's the problem. Also, as far as I know, I have the latest firmware for the drive-just checked perhaps a month ago. Perhaps you can take a look at the log and see if you can spot the problem.
I tried it again and the first time I burned, I burned in test mode only and it worked fine. When I burned the second time with the verify box checked, this is what I got, full log:
