So i got one of these drives recently since my old lg drive couldnt burn dual layers. This one burns them like a king and they work great but when it comes to normal dvd's it hangs every time. To write the lead in it takes about 10 mins, i left the thing running for 12 hours and it was 4% complete at a whopping 2kb/s.

The drive reads dvds perfectly fine, just cant write them at all.

The two types of disks i have used are:

verbatim x16 dvd+r (dont have the cover anymore so exact manu info isnt available)

memorex x16 dvd+r (these are the ones i have been pissing away as coasters since i have a tonne of them, they are lightscribe as well)

When i put my old dvd writer in they burn perfectly fine so i am not suspecting its the media.

I am running vista ulti 64 bit. Things i have tried:

set region on dvd burner

updated firmware to latest version

uninstall device in safemode and reboot

uninstall IDE channel in safemode and reboot

uninstall all other burning software but imgburn and reboot

tested other dvd burner with same disks (they work)

tried burning just files to disk from windows and using imgburn, both fail

here is my imgburn log, note the timestamps

Any help would be appreciated. My gut is telling me its a dud drive

Could you test that drive on another computer? Or perhaps with an IDE-to-USB adapter?

I think your gut may be right, unless the Verbs burn better.

I may be able to try on another pc but it wont be my own so its a bit of a pain time wise. That was the last thing i was going to give a try. The nice thing is i got it from futureshop so i can buy another and return this one to prove out if its the drive or not.

And the verbs do the identical behaviour.

One thing i may be doing is formating to see if its the OS but i may just get a friend to test them out first since it would be the same situation almost.

Thanks for the fast replies though.

Update on this one, picked up a 2nd drive, tested it out, same thing, looks like its time to get different disc and try that out. or throw it in a new computer. Back to bestbuy with this one lol.
