i read on an earlier post it might have something to do with the burner saying " (raid) "

im burning a 6gb image onto a verbatim DL+ dvd

Yes, get the drive off that controller and plug it into a native chipset sata port if possible.

It's probably on a jmicron one at the moment.

You could also give the latest drivers a go.
