Playing .avi file on a DVD Player

I am trying to burn an video clip (.avi) to a DVD disc and play it on my DVD player but I get an error message saying the format is not recognized by the player. Is there a way I can do this? What file types can be burned to disc and played on a DVD player please?

If your player can play .avi files it should work. If not - convert it to DVD compliant files with a free tool such as DVD Flick.
