gir489 Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) This is the second time this has happened tonight. ImgBurn keeps going to 0.0x burn speed, and essentially coastering my discs. DVD+R DLs are very expensive, and I can't keep having it coaster my discs. What can I do to make sure this never happens again? gir489 Posted October 7, 2009 Author Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) No, it got to 10%, then went to 0.0x. I noticed it when I went to change out the discs, it was still burning. So, I ALT+TAB'd out of GTA IV, and noticed it was stuck at 10%. 22 minutes had elapsed since I started burning it. Once it gets stuck, it just sits there. Nothing I can do. gir489 Posted October 7, 2009 Author Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) I figured out the problem. I recently got the 7200 RPM 2TB Hitachi Deskstar drive and its read speed over 120MB/s. ImgBurn will try to burn over 8x and then freeze. I capped the write speed at 8x and it no longer gets stuck. Edited October 7, 2009 by gir489

Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Are you running the 1.07 firmware on that ND-3550A drive? http://www.firmwarehq.com/NEC/ND-3550A/files.html The drive is pretty old now so the RITEK-S04-66 dye might not be the best one for it. The speed of your hdd has nothing to do with the issue.

It's only of recent have I run across this issue. Those discs are Memorexs, but for some reason it comes up as RITEK signed discs. But, I'm pretty sure you already know that. Those discs are Memorexs, but for some reason it comes up as RITEK Because Memorex does not produce the actual disc, they simply buy them from Ritek and they are rebadged by the manufacturer to say Memorex. I capped the write speed at 8x and it no longer gets stuck. Then your burner likes the media at that speed.

EDIT: After shutting down the PC, I took out the drives to inspect them and I noticed they were REALLY hot! I'm talking hard drive temperatures. Maybe over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It didn't feel too good to hold the drive in my hands for very long. The two drives were in the lower two bays. I moved them to the upper 2 bays. (long story, but it had to do with the old PCI IDE slot placement. I changed the drive's IDE controller to the motherboard, but never put them back in the top.) So, I'll try again, and post the results. EDIT2: I did the exact same job again. It was successful this time. But it could be luck of the draw. I'll report back if the 0.0x burn rate failure happens again. EDIT3: I don't know if this applies, but I went to burn another ISO and I got the Power Calibration Area Error while it was setting the L0 datazone. I hit retry, and it went through. Reason: Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (ULTRA-DMA/32) That's an error you typically get when you need a new cable (as short as possible).

Your IDE port is provided by a Marvell 88SE6111 chipset. I assume your bios is up-to-date? The ones for the motherboard will update the Marvell / Silicon Image one too. gir489 Posted October 9, 2009 Author Posted October 9, 2009 (edited) That's for SATA drivers. I updated the BIOS to 2002 when I first got the motherboard. I changed the cable from the ASUS cable to an IDE cable from an old XBOX 1. That gave me write errors, so I then changed it again to a Foxconn cable I had from an old Dell box. It seems to be working fine now on the Foxconn cable. I'll let you know if the error happens again now. EDIT: Wow. On the new cable, both drives are able to burn at 8X simultaneously now. Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 The specs for your board say: Marvell 88SE6111- 1 x UltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices So that means the Marvell 88SE6111 controller is responsible for your IDE drives. The additional SATA ports (beyond the standard 6 on the Intel controller) are on a Silicon Image controller. Did you try installing it? It's designed and listed as a download for your board so it certainly wouldn't hurt to put it on anyway.

No, the white and orange ones are connected to the Silicon Image Sil5723 controller (Drive Xpert technology or another fancy name for RAID). The Marvell controller is responsible solely for the IDE port.

So far, ImgBurn has not resorted to faulting out with 0.0x after I switched the cables to the Foxconn cables. Those ASUS cables had been under quite a lot of stress. It was attached to a C: drive before since I've been using the motherboard and after I replaced the C: drive with the SATA drive, it was used to control the drives. I guess it just died. Anyway, it's working perfectly; burning 2 discs simultaneously at 8x with no faults.
