HorseyBoy Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Hi guys, I'm having problems with the "Waiting for buffers to recover/Waiting for hard disk activity to reach threshold level..." error burning Blu-ray discs (BD-R and BD-RE) using an LG BE06LU10 (YE05 firmware) drive. The drive is LG's external USB model, which may be a part of the problem. Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions to overcome the error. The error only occurs on Blu-ray discs (DVD-Rs and DVD+R DL discs work just fine, burning up to 16x speed) and I'm only using good quality media: TDK and Verbatim BD-Rs and a Verbatim BD-RE. I'm running XP SP3 on a Boot Camp partition (ie, no virtualisation is involved) and use ImgBurn in Build Mode, writing directly to the Device. The errors usually begin once the burn is around 70-80% complete. I should also add that all the discs I've burned complete and verify just fine, and I've had no problem at all with playback. Everything works, but because the drive is constantly waiting for the buffers to recover, it works very slowly. Even though I've searched the forums and read everything I can, I'm still not 100% sure why the problem occurs, and why it only occurs for me on Blu-ray discs. Is it something to do with the Blu-ray disc structure and the number of files involved? (Building a DVD video disc, as I said, works perfectly.) Is it because I'm using a USB burner and it can't deal with the speed? (Again, I have no problem burning Verbatim DVD-Rs at 16x speed.) Aside from just living with it, what can I do? I tried enabling the "Reading - always use buffered I/O" setting and it didn't make any difference. I'm guessing increasing the buffer size (I'm at the default 40MB setting) won't make any difference either - once the buffer starts to empty, it empties pretty quickly. The only other things I can think of are maybe writing to an ISO file first (instead of writing straight to the device) and then burning from the ISO, or possibly using a different driver. Would the WIN32 ASPI driver work better for USB devices than the default SPTI interface? Any ideas?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 The log and IBG files from the burns would be useful.

mmalves Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Your E: drive, is it an internal, external or network drive? It's not feeding data fast enough for burning at 6x and that's why you're getting so many buffer recoveries.
HorseyBoy Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 The E: drive is an internal drive. It's actually the OS X (HFS+) partition. My C: drive is the Boot Camp (NTFS) partition. I use MacDrive so I can read and write to the HFS+ partition. Maybe something in the "translation" is slowing it down. The weird thing is, I have no problems at all burning DVD-R discs at 16x speed off the same drive. There's no speed issue there. I would have thought it would be a consistent problem if it was the drive. Also, I get the exact same problem if I burn the same files to a BD-RE at 2x speed or to a BD-R at 4x, so slowing down the burn speed doesn't seem to make a difference. Would it make a difference if I made an ISO first and then burned that?
mmalves Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Would it make a difference if I made an ISO first and then burned that? You can try but I'm not sure if it'll help Also avoid using the E: drive with other program(s) while burning, as that kills the transfer rate.
HorseyBoy Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 Also avoid using the E: drive with other program(s) while burning, as that kills the transfer rate. I'm not doing anything at all except burning. No other programs are active:-(
HorseyBoy Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 Looking at the log and IBG file and thinking about this some more, I still have no idea why everything starts out fine then deteriorates towards the end of the burn. Is it possible I'm running out of virtual memory? I'm only running a small (6GB) Boot Camp partition specifically for burning with ImgBurn and only have around 2GB free for swap space. Could that be the problem? Or is it possible that my processor (a 2GHz Core Duo) just isn't fast enough to handle everything? I'd really like to fix this somehow.
mmalves Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Have you tried burning from an ISO image? If you really want to nail the problem then it's worth trying. Also post the log of creating the ISO image and burning it
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I 14:33:04 Average Write Rate: 7,387 KB/s (1.6x) - Maximum Write Rate: 25,747 KB/s (5.7x) That's actually quite fast for USB, maybe your machine/controller can't handle more? The best way to test would be to use Discovery mode as that rules the 'source' drive out (it's all done from memory) - but that means wasting a disc on what is essentially 'nothing' (it just writes zeroes to the entire discs).
HorseyBoy Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 (edited) Have you tried burning from an ISO image? If you really want to nail the problem then it's worth trying. Also post the log of creating the ISO image and burning it I will try:-) I also thought I might try burning from an external USB hard drive. I was a bit worried about burning from one USB device to another, but I figure it's worth a shot. Edited November 9, 2009 by HorseyBoy

Hi Lightning, The problem is, I get the same error regardless of burn speed: if I burn the same files to a BD-RE at 2x, the buffers start to go on me at the very same spot. I'd be happy to try Discovery mode and waste a disc if it was only a DVD-R, but BD-R discs are so damn expensive that the cheapskate in me can't bear the thought of throwing one away:-) In any case, I think it could be a problem with the hard disc, although I have no idea why. I just tried burning a BD-RE from a USB external (also HFS+ formatted, using MacDrive so XP can "see" it) and it burned beautifully at 2x - I sat there and watched it and the buffers (device and disc) didn't move off 100% for a second. The log and IBG file are attached. I was trying to avoid burning from a USB disk to a USB burner (I'd read somewhere that it wasn't a good idea), but it worked flawlessly. I'd still like to know why it worked though. The USB external had a lot of free space (nearly 400GB) and the internal only had around 40GB free (still, I would have thought that was plenty). Maybe the internal drive is just prone to fragmentation, whereas the external isn't? Any ideas? I 11:51:10 ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 started! LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 If you hit the same issue at the same spot with different write speeds, it must be a generic hdd problem. Notice how the CPU usage shoots up too. You should certainly try defragging the drive to see if that makes any difference. You could also do some normal benchmarks on the drive to see what it's capable of. You could try burning at 6x off your usb hdd but I've no idea how it would cope with 50mb/s+ between the two ports!
HorseyBoy Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 You should certainly try defragging the drive to see if that makes any difference. You could also do some normal benchmarks on the drive to see what it's capable of. I'll defrag it and see what happens. Unfortunately OS X doesn't have a defragger built in to the system (because it doesn't "need" a defragger, they say), and you can't defrag while you're booted from the drive, which means booting from an external or a DVD, crossing your fingers and hoping. It's not the simple task it should be. Anyway, assuming it's a problem with fragmentation, why does it only affect BD-R burns and not DVD-R and DVD+R DL burns? Is it simply the size and number of the files being thrown around?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 No idea! You aren't burning many files so it's certainly not anything to do with the 'number of files'. Maybe the later ones are just in an odd place on the hdd. It's harder to diagnose because of the whole MacDrive thing. Some process / driver is just killing the system when you reach ~12GB into the burn. You might be able to use Process Explorer to find out what it is.
