Is there an issue when burning files that are on a network drive?

Cause every time i do this, The burning takes double the time and i get lots of waiting for buffer messages. IS this normal?

What can i don to improve this behavior?

I'm in a home network with the client and the server computer. They communicate in a 100mbit lan.

What speed can/do you actually achieve from your networked machine?

If you'd posted a log like you're supposed to ( :chair: ), I'd have had the info I needed to give you a better / more accurate answer.

Update ImgBurn.

There's newer firmware available for your burner (remove any disc and close the tray before updating then reboot after it's finished).

As for the speed...

I 15:49:08 Average Write Rate: 6,084 KB/s (4.4x) - Maximum Write Rate: 18,300 KB/s (13.2x)

I 16:01:07 Average Verify Rate: 6,172 KB/s (4.5x) - Maximum Verify Rate: 9,662 KB/s (7.0x)

Notice the average write and verify speeds: looking at them it seems the fastest burn speed your network can maintain is 4x, and just barely.

Does the server have only one network card? Is it also used to access/share Internet traffic as well? Installing more memory and service pack 2 could also help.

IS there a way to import settings from previous versions after a fresh installation so that i wont have to reapply the old settings from scratch?

Yes it does hve one lan adapter, and it is not really a server, it's just an old PC i use for downloading/storing files and then burning discs. I sometimes may want to burn files located on the client Computer.

The server is really low spec. P4 1.8Ghz 640 (128+512) SDRAM (not even ddr1!) so dont expect much from it. Although at the time of this burn compilation i had closed azureus and firefox which are the 2 programs that consume the more moemory and there were no other processes demanding any resources.

It does have access to the internet, but it does not provide the access. The router is connected to the switch where both computers get it from.

Run the installer and it'll ask if you want to keep your current settings.

You'll need to copy the files to a local HD before you can burn them faster than 4x :(

The buffering option on the I/O tab in the settings may help but you should change the write speed to the max your system can handle (i.e. 4x) - do not leave it on 'MAX'.

7mb/s via the 100mbit lan is pretty bad, you should see more like 10 - 12mb/s.

There's obviously a bigger issue here.

Do i first have to uninstall previous version before i install the newer, or will i not be asked to keep settings if i do so.

There's obviously a bigger issue here.

Any idea what that might be? I know that something is wrong, but basically i thought that this PC is not "strong" enough based on the SPECS i listed previously.

Also if i keep it on MAX will it try to get over 4x, and will that be the reason for buffer and instability issues?

Posted

No, you don't need to uninstall. If you do you'll lose your settings.

No, only you can figure that out by doing lots of the transfer tests where you copy stuff over the network. You might like to install something like DU Meter so you can see what's going on and what speeds you're getting.

If you keep it on MAX then your drive will try to burn at its maximum speed.

i.e. 20x

Ok this time it looks as though it only encountered one buffer issue, but other than that things went smoother. And i also had firefox+Azureus running using 200M of memory.

When there's a buffer underun what does that mean, and why is the LBA mentioned? Is it most likely that an error could encounter there after a buffer issue?

On another note, i updated imgburn and it asked to keep settings, but it said since i updated from 2.4.2.0 some settings need to be set manually. From time to time i may tweak something here and there, and now i dont remember exactly what i have had changed in order to make the changes i previously had.

ImgBurn 2.5.0.0 may have reset some very specific settings from older versions that weren't optimal, and most likely it didn't touch the ones you've changed.

As for the buffer underrun it happens when the files couldn't be read fast enough to maintain the selected write speed. If you were torrenting while burning then that could've affected the network transfer speed.

An additional question i thought of.

If burning a mixed compilation with files being both local (on the same computer) and in a network location, is there a way to have a variable burning speed? For example use 4x for the network files and max for the local ones?
