ImgBurn 2.4.4.0 portable hangs on Write Image to Disc

Recommended Posts

I have only recently starting using ImgBurn and used the installed version before using it in portable mode a couple of weeks ago.

I am using it on a new Dell Vostro 1720 currently running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1. The laptop is only a month or so old. AFAIK all drivers/firmware are updated.

I have successfully written to CD-RW before but the past couple of times it hangs while burning. Both times it has hung when indicating Complete 10% and 19%, Buffer at 100% and Device Buffer at 92%. I am trying to burn a bootable ISO of a WinXP install created using nLite's internal ISO creator.

TIA...

Below is a copy of my log:

Btw, once the write process has hung, i have tried to cancel the request by clicking the Cancel button, but the request does not cancel and ImgBurn continues to hang.

It seems the only way to close out ImgBurn in this state and regain access to the drive is to reboot.

There is no disk or CPU activity as far as i can tell.

tks again...

I just managed to write/verify the same ISO image to the same CD-RW disc using a different laptop, a Dell Latitude D600 running Windows XP SP3.

Can only conclude from this that there is an issue with (in no particular order):

1. ImgBurn 2.4.4.0 running on Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1

2. ImgBurn 2.4.4.0 using the drive in my Dell Vostro 1720

3. The drive hardware

4. The drive firmware

5. Vista

I suspect Vista is the issue (the piece of rubbish that it is). After the previous hang, i rebooted. Vista was not able to recognise the disc in the drive. I opened both ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP. Both were not able to recognise the drive or at least see the disc in the drive for me to erase/format it.

I have tried putting a different disc into the drive (a HP printer drivers CD) and this is recognized OK. Perhaps Vista has a issue with that disc, even though XP can read it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

Why are you using 2.4.4.0 when 2.5.0.0 has been out for ages?

Anyway, the issue you're having could be a buggy storage driver or perhaps a bad filter driver. Look for the latest drivers for your storage controller(s). Use SIW to find their brand/model if you don't know them.

Also post your Filter Driver Load Order (look in ImgBurn's Tools menu).

Thanks for your reply.

I was looking for a portable version of ImgBurn. Version 2.4.4.0 was the only version i could find as a portable. Is it possible to use 2.5 without using the installer? If so, that is what i would prefer, but i didn't find a portable version of 2.5 on the ImgBurn site.

The DVD writer is an LG HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT10N f/w A108. AFAIK this is the latest FW. The laptop is only about 1 month old.

Also post your Filter Driver Load Order (look in ImgBurn's Tools menu).

The Load Order lists:

Upper Device Filter: None found

Upper Class Filter: None found

Device: CD/DVD-ROM Device

Lower Class Filter: None found

Lower Device Filter: None found

Thanks.

You are right. Use the ImgBurn.exe file as the portable version. Either use the installer to get it or just extract the installer with a program such as www.7-org.zip.

Most time when drives hung is related to old/wrong drives for the chipset (Intel/Nvidia/jmicron) on the motherboard.

Thanks Cynthia. Will d/l v2.5 and extract/try as portable on notebook running Vista. Everything working fine on other laptop running XP.

In this case laptop is new with Intel mobile chipset.
