I/O Error with Pioneer & Verbatim

Recommended Posts

I had the same problem I/O error as everybody else but already went and bought a brand new Pioneer DVR-S18L (SATA) and the same error comes up. I have tried both verbatims and aones but that didn't make a difference.

I did a virtual ram check (all was ok), updated the firmware, formatted and changed the OS from Windows 7 to XP, tried an older version of imgburn, wrote from different hdd's, tried the Patin-Couffin Software and ended up reinstalling W7 because none of those made a difference.

Ultra DMA Mode 5 is also enabled.

The only thing that worked for the first copy (but none afterwards) was to select 'Reading - Always use buffered I/O' and changing the buffer to 512MB

I don't have the error log anymore but it's basically the same... the burn process fails after approx 10 minutes every time.

Sorry, with all the formatting I lost the error log but it's basically the same as everybody else's...

Please Help!!!

Thanks!

Just burn another disc so we can get an actual log please.

It's a waste of time to try and troubleshoot without one, there are loads of different 'I/O Errors'.

Those options you changed have nothing to do with anything.

btw, I guess you purchased that Pioneer because you'd heard good things about Pioneer drives... well the x18 models are different to all previous Pioneer drives because they use the Mediatek chipset and not the NEC one. That's to say, you've ended up with what is essentially a LiteOn drive - only where LiteOn have been doing firmware for Mediatek chipsets for years, this is basically Pioneers first attempt.

Your burner doesn't like the blanks you're using, and we've seen many people having problems with that dye/ink. Use Verbatim DVD+R DL blanks and it should work.

Thanks for the quick reply!

The verbatim's I had previously used must have been duds from India...

Although I've been doing this for a while now I never had any problems burning the DL's and therefore never had to understand the error log...

I would appreciate it if you could please explain to me how the section you referred to shows that the discs are at fault?

I am eager to learn but just don't know how to read/understand the log.

Thanks!

Notice the bold text in my post above: that's the disc identification code: it tells the burner what material was used to make the blank disc, and then the burner can choose the appropriate way to write on that type of material. Did you see that the only available write speed is 4x? That's because Pioneer decided that this material can't be burned faster than that, which is usually a sign of low quality media.

The next line shows the error your burner returned when ImgBurn told it to burn those sectors: Write Error. It means the drive wasn't able to write to the disc, which can be caused by dirt on the burner's lens (very unlikely in a new burner like yours) or low quality media.

Verbatim only uses 2 dyes: MKM-001-00 for their 2.4x rated blanks which have been in the market ever since dual-layer burning was made available, and MKM-003-00 for their 8x rated blanks, which your new burner probably supports burning up to 10x speed or even more.
