Successful burn to dvd-rw but disc is empty !!!

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've been having this recently. I am using MSI laptop with Windows 7. Many times when I burn a .img or .iso file to a DVD (I have used both DVD-R and -RW and results are random) - the burn gets completed successfully but the disc does not play in the DVD player.

I put the disc back in my laptop and fired up ImgBurn in read mode - it gives message that the disc is empty.

Here is the very recent log. Any thoughts?

Another piece of information is probably worth providing:

My DVD drive is: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT10N Firmware version 1.01

Through IMGBurn - it shows that the drive has an updated firmware version - located here: http://www.firmwarehq.com/LG/GT10N/files.html

I have downloaded the latest version (version 107) but while updating - I'm getting message "Valid ATAPI device cannot be found. F/W model is DVD+-RW GT10N"

However, my device is DVD RAM GT10N.

If anyone can inform how I can update firmware - that'll be helpful as well

Posted

The firmware on that page is A107, which means it updates burners that have A100~A106 versions. Also notice that the firmware updater is looking for a burner with DVD+-RW in the name, and yours is DVDRAM, which means they have different capabilities.

You might be able to find a firmware update for your burner in the support/download section of your laptop's manufacturer website.

So for some reason the disc you are using is not closed and that's why you can't see the burned stuff on it.

Not sure why the program reports this:

I 23:36:20 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:28:22

Do you get the same issue if you use a non RW disc?

Also look for updated drivers for your motherboard's chipset and/or storage controller(s). Use SIW to find their brand/model and get the latest drivers from their respective manufacturers.

I have checked laptop manufacturer website and confirmed that I have the latest firmware.

Also, this is not only happening for -RW discs, it is happening for -R discs as well.

Ok - here is something really freaky.

I just burned a .img file and got message that operation successfully completed. Loaded it into dvd player - it cannot play it.

Loaded it back to the DVD writer and disc came up as empty. Just out of curiosity I hit burn and it started to burn.

What the heck is happening? How come a -R disc that was finalized before can be burned again? If it was not burned in the first place - what happened for 30 minutes?

I have tried a few different +R, -R and -RW discs. Results are very random. Same image file sometimes burns ok, sometimes it doesn't. Most weird part is: I burned a few +R and -R discs with the same image. A few times the discs got burnt (I looked at the data side of the DVDs and the color difference showed that those were burnt) - but when I loaded imgburn again, those discs came up as blank !!!!!!!!!!!!

I am out of ideas. This has become extremely weird.

Maybe the problem is with ImgBurn. All my burnings are working just fine using Nero. Looks like the issue was just compatibility issue with Windows 7 and ImgBurn

Posted

The only thing that Ner0 may be doing that ImgBurn doesn't by default is using the Incremental write type. There's an option for using it in ImgBurn's settings.

And yes, ImgBurn is fully compatible with Windows 7: I've been using Windows 7 since before RC1 and ImgBurn never had any problems with it.

Also please do what I said above about looking for updated drivers, as the ones you're using are messing with the communication to the burner (e.g. the No Additional Sense error you've had before).

Posted

Thanks - I will try this Incremental write type and post my findings. Even though Nero works - I don't like that program :)

I have looked for updated drivers but looks like I have the most up-to-date ones. I'll check it out again.

I attempted another write after changing write type to "incremental". Also set write speed as 4x. This time it burnt just fine. I have a few more files to burn - I will keep you posted.

The issue seems to be fixed after changing write type to "incremental". I have burnt at 4 discs on different types of medias - all were successful.

As advised by mmalves - I have updated my chipset driver as well.

Thanks everyone who helped. The issue is now fixed :)
