Teknogrebo Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Hi there. Another new member, the same old problems. I've been searching for weeks to help me with this problem, but haven't been able to resolve it myself. I've been using ImgBurn for years on my old PC, so when I bought my new laptop it was one of the first bits of software i installed. All was fine for a while, but then I started having problems burning thing. I updated the firmware on the TSSTCorp drive that came with the laptop, then when I just couldn't get a succesful burn (i had various problems such as successful burns not producing any data on disk, or burns not working in the laptop they were burnt on etc). Eventually I caved in and bought a Pioneer burner which arrived today. So, I slotted the new drive in, tried to burn a disk, and got a whole new problem. Having failed one burn, I tried a few things in test mode. This is all on verbatim media which has been realiable so far. Here'e the log: I 22:03:59 ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 started! LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Change the Write Type back to DAO/SAO. Try burning some different discs. Perhaps the Verbatim DVD+R ones instead? Too late now, but you'd have been better off forgetting about the internal drive and just buying a decent external.
Teknogrebo Posted December 10, 2009 Author Posted December 10, 2009 Change the Write Type back to DAO/SAO. Try burning some different discs. Perhaps the Verbatim DVD+R ones instead? Too late now, but you'd have been better off forgetting about the internal drive and just buying a decent external. Well, I changed to DAO/SAO - Got out my best "only for special occassions" Taiyo Yuden disks and got exactly the same result. Got to 81% and got the same error. I'm going to try and keep calm here and just say that I have read loads of forums about these kinds of problems, and the first answer is nearly always try different media, and the second is usually try a different burner. In my desktop PC I was burning DVD's for years and could use whatever media I wanted. I only needed Taiyo Yuden for very specific cases so I really don't understand. For the first month or so everything was working fine with my original laptop burner with the verbatims so I really can't see why changing the media should make any difference. Sorry to be a newbie here and start sounding like a troll, but I just want to be able to burn dvd's on my shiny new laptop!
mmalves Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Return the burner as defective and get an external, non-slim burner instead, because not being able to burn the best blanks on the market is a serious problem.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 If the drive won't burn Verbatims and it won't burn Taiyo Yudens then what's the point in keeping it?! They are without a doubt the two best 'brands' of disc you can buy and a drive that can't burn them is effectively 'broken/faulty'. EDIT: Damn too slow, I hesitated posting whilst looking for firmware updates
Teknogrebo Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 If the drive won't burn Verbatims and it won't burn Taiyo Yudens then what's the point in keeping it?! They are without a doubt the two best 'brands' of disc you can buy and a drive that can't burn them is effectively 'broken/faulty'. EDIT: Damn too slow, I hesitated posting whilst looking for firmware updates I'm somewhat sad to hear that the consensus is to get (yet another) new burner. Why is it that when I first bought the laptop it worked absolutely fine, and now doesn't? Also, I have a non-slim pioneer drive that I had in my desktop machine that serviced me perfectly well for years, so well in fact that I bought a USB/Firewire housing for it to try and use it with my laptop. I have been completely unable to burn anything on that drive as well, although I am willing to admit that it could be that I bought a cheap(ish) housing for it, and that was a false economy. I am however, somewhat reticent to throw even more money at the problem. Is there really no other answer?
mmalves Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 If there was another option don't you think we would have said it already? As for the Pioneer in the external enclosure, post the log of a burn with it and we'll tell you what can be done to make it work.
Teknogrebo Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 Well I guess so, but I'm still surprised. Nobody has really offered a suggestion as to why it suddenly stopped working! Anyway, I've just moved house, so the external burner is still in box somewhere. I'll post results as soon as I can.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Why does anything just stop working?! Because it just does and that's why you buy new things - it's good for the economy.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Can you try some TYG02 or TYG03 discs? If it fails with those too, bin the drive.
Cynthia Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Curious. The new laptop - was it preinstalled with Windows 7 or did you install it yourself? It came preinstalled with Vista. The problems were around then, and i kind of hoped that upgrading to win7 would resolve it. But it didn't. I wonder if you have the right drivers for your motherboards chipset installed.
