bd-re in bdmv format - works on pc, not on ps3

I have been successfully using Imgburn in a process of backing up my blu-rays to ISO files on my HDD. That process includes Anydvd, then clownbd (and its associates parts), then imgburn. Using default setting on all. I use PowerDVD to play on PC and works great. I now am having a problem when trying to trasnfer to BD-RE discs. I tried using the ISO files as source, then the BDMV+certificate folders, and the BD-RE can be played back on the PC using PowerDVD, but when I put it in my PS3, it doesn't show under video, no error messages, just gets ignored. It reminds me of a DVD that is not finalized; does Imgburn have a finalization that is needed when creating on BD-RE?

ImgBurn always finalises discs. Please post the log of that burn from the BDMV folder (you can find older logs in ImgBurn's Help menu).

Thanks for responding. Here is the log (ANYDVD was disabled at the time):

Have you tried that disc on other PS3 or other BluRay players? Try with a Verbatim BD-RE disc, as in our experience Verbatim works best for most people.

I tried Verbatim BD-RE and still have the problem. The disc reads on the PC it was created on, but not on my PS3. I also tried on another PC. In both of the 'other' machines I get no error message, and both act as if nothing is in the drive. The symptoms are similar to not finalizing in that it is ignored by other machines. This is true for Phillips and Verbatim discs, and multiple attempts with different movies. Below is the profile that Imgburn gives me when loaded into the machine that created it. I hope that someone might be able to point out some setting error or obvious user error.

Seems like an odd problem, ockevin. All I can tell you is that I've never had a problem using ImgBurn and BD-RE discs (Verbatim and TDK) with my PS3. I've never burned from an ISO - always just the BDMV folder - but the PS3 has read every disc just fine.

Posted

I am starting to wonder about the formatting. The first time I use the BD-RE, Imgburn says it needs formatting and asks if I want to let it do the format, and I say yes. Is this what you do, is there an alternative?

Posted

No, a blank BD-RE always needs formatting first. The drive will just reject the 'Write' commands if it hasn't been formatted first.

There are options in the settings to enable/disable spare areas. By default the discs are formatted with them disabled.

Yes, I just let ImgBurn do the formatting. Always a full format (not a quick format), using the ImgBurn defaults (ie, spare areas disabled).

Success! I want to thank everyone for their help, especially Lightning UK; I believe the enabling of spare areas led to a successfull PS3 readable BD-RE. I do have a question; I began in explorer, I right clicked the BR drive and selected format. It ran in seconds, and when finished, I tried to burn the BD-RE with ImgBurn. ImgBurn stated formatting was needed, and I then ran with spare areas enabled. This created the successful BD-RE, but just wondering about that Window 7 'format'. I had read that 3rd party formats were required for BD-RE, what did that Windows format do?

Posted

It was probably the same as ImgBurn's Quick Erase, where just the first 800 sectors of a disc are erased.

Thanks, that makes sense with how fast it ran. I did some reading on spare areas, and from what I read it appeared to be the standard to have spare areas. I realize that eats up some space on the BD. I am wondering how is it that 'no spare areas' works in some cases (can be read by some players), and doesn't work in others? I have only used BD-RE, what about BD-R? Most importantly, is there a way to 'format only' or 'force a format' with Imgburn? Again, I am trying to learn, and I appreciate all the help given on this forum.
