linx05 Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Hi guys. I have a problem which I have no idea how to fix. I've been backing up a couple DVDs lately (can't trust my friends/family when I lend them out ) and the device buffer only stays at 79% (see attachment). It stays there, never goes up nor down. The burn turns out perfectly fine. But this never happened before I formated my computer. I burnt a Data CD the other week and it didn't have that problem, the device buffer went right up to 100%. Is there a setting on ImgBurn that I should change? My buffer size was on default. I decided to increase it up to 35mb to see if it made a difference. No difference. I have also added the log for the DVD burn. Thank you. ImgBurn.log
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I don't think there is anything you can do about it. The drive accepts data when it wants to and puts it in the buffer. Maybe it's just decided it doesn't like it being full up all the time - or it's mis-reporting the buffer status.
linx05 Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 Thanks for the reply. I just find it wierd it has only happened after the format. I guess if the burns come out right I should just live with it. I don't know.
lfcrule1972 Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Have you noticed the burns taking longer ? If so it would seem to point to the drive not accepting as much data whereas if they are taking the same time its just mis-reporting.... Not much help either way I suppose
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 It might be worth checking to see if you have 40 wire or 80 wire IDE cables in your PC. 40 wire will throttle your available bandwidth, particularly if your burner and HD share an IDE channel.
linx05 Posted April 24, 2006 Author Posted April 24, 2006 Thanks for the responses guys. I will check that tomorrow Shamus (note to self, look up what Shamus post meant). Though I don't see why it would affect it, because burning CDs are fine, it is just DVDs which have the "problem".
Kenadjian Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 Data transfer to DVD's is far greater than CD's, therefore the clearer the "highway" to the burner, the better. Imagine two lanes of highway trafic merging into one, result=chaos.
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted April 25, 2006 Posted April 25, 2006 Thanks for the responses guys. I will check that tomorrow Shamus (note to self, look up what Shamus post meant). Though I don't see why it would affect it, because burning CDs are fine, it is just DVDs which have the "problem". Have a re-read of what Lightning_UK mentioned above. It might just be a firmware problem with your burner. Afterall, your main buffer is full. Having your burner and HD (source and destination drives) on seperate IDE, SATA or RAID channels (and using 80 wire IDE ribbon cable where possible), gives your PC the best chance of efficiently moving around the huge amount of data transferred when burning a DVD.
lfcrule1972 Posted April 25, 2006 Posted April 25, 2006 Hopefully an update will follow - I am curious now.....
OpTicaL Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Device buffers never reach 100% at least for all the DVD burners I know of (Plextor, LG, BenQ, Lite-On) BenQ buffers flucuate consistantly but it's known to be normal.
Kenadjian Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Sorry to dissapoint, but my LG4120 sits on a 100% day in day out.
