Playing interrupts between 25-45 minutes.

Hello,

Lately I'm burning some DL DVD+R's with a TSSC Corp SH222L and I've notived an interruption during playing in a stand alone DVD player (Philips HDD recorder DVDR5330H).

Both the Philips player and the TSSC burner have the latest firmware.

The Philips is about 3 years old, the TSSC 2 months as I bought it to burn double layer DVD's.

The first were burned on RITEK-S04-66 at 4X and 8X.

The image freezes and sound stops for a second or so, then it continues.

The interruption "sounds like" (the noise the player makes during the interruption) a layer break but there is no layer break at 25 minutes.

Strangly, this interruption only occurs between 25 and 45 minutes of playing, not before, not after, not even during the layer break.

Sometimes only once, sometimes more than twice.

At first I thought it was the media so I bought Verbatim MKM-003-00 as suggested but that didn't help.

The burning itself goes flawless, no problems with seamless layer breaks, nothing.

After starting with the slowest writing speed (4X) I've tried different writing speeds with no luck.

One thing, I still had some old Philips DVD+R DL's (RITEK-D01-01) and they did not have the problem.

They we burned at 2.4X speed.

I can't find the other recommended Verbatim's, the MKM-001-00.

If they are still listed they are not in stock and/or discontinued.

The MKM-003-00 can't be burned at 2.4X unfortunately (or can they??)

I've tried to use the 2.4X setting on the MKM-003-00 but IMGburn would just not accept it.

Should I get a better DVD-DL burner?

Is it the Philips player?

Thanks for reading.

Here's the log of the latest burn:

IMGBurn showed 0 miscompare and 0 burn faults (names are IIRC)

I thought it would show those in the log file but I can't see them.

Also, I changed the book type to DVD-ROM.

At first I thought that didn't go through but as you can see it did.

The DVD plays on the player but I haven't watched it completely yet.

As you can see in the log I tried to use the AWS to see if it would burn at 2.4x but it didn't.

What I also tried:

Change the supported burn speeds with MediaCodeSpeedEdit.

Funny thing is that in the SB02 firmware the MKM-003-00 is not listed.

The MKM-001 is and a MKM-004 - and one has 2.4X speed support.

I've tried to copy the MKM-003-00 settings found with DVD Identifier into the firmware but that didn't work, the drive froze after a succesful flash and reboot.

Fortunately it woke up after reflashing the original SB02.

Also, I've downloaded the DVDInfopro to look at the graph files but I don't really know what to look for.

In older graphs I did see a change in speed in the beginning when burning at 6x or 8x but no change when burning at 2.4x

The last burn - DVD-ROM book type - also showed no speed change, at 4x.

As soon as I've watched the DVD I'll report back.

Thanks for reading.

The slowest burn speed doesn't necessarily result in a better quality burn, especially when using 8x rated blanks on a new burner like yours. Burn at 8x or 6x and you might get a better burn quality.

But I've tried 3 burn speeds with these MKM-003-00 blanks, 4X, 6X and 8X and all had the playback "problem".

Even the one of which I posted the log file & verified earlier.

5 freezes, at 28 minutes, 32, 35 48 and 58.

Now the good news: I've managed to succesfully change the SB02 firmware.

The MKM-003-00 now shows 2 supported speeds in IMGBurn, 2.4x and 4x (a copy of the MKM-001)

The version of MCSE I had messed-up the binary, after downloading the previous version it worked.

Within a couple of days I will burn another Verbatim MKM-003-00 at 2.4x and I will keep my fingers crossed.

If it doesn't work I can always reflash the official SB02 and start working on the Philips DVD player.

(but I have no idea what to do, maybe run a cleaning disk?)

We'll see.

:)

This is the final update.

It's the Philips DVD player's fault

I've watched a MKM-003-00 (burned at 10X) on a Samsung DVD-HR750 > no problems.

Btw.. eventhough the edited TSST Corp SB02 firmware showed only 2 supported write speeds for the MKM-003 and after selecting 2,4x, IMGBurn would not burn it at 2,4x, it did it at 4x.

But it gave no write speed mismatch warning.

Oh well...

Now I have to figure out what to do with the Philips DVD.

See-ya.

And THANK YOU for IMGBurn :w00t:

Well.. those harddisk DVD recorders are using some off-the-shelf components.

A Maxtor 250GD HDD.

A generic Philips DVD burner.

Both with 40 conductor IDE cables connected to a simple motherboard with a Philips ECU.

First I tried to open up the burner to see if I could find anything.

All seemed ok so I put it back in.

Playback still had interruptions.

So I took it out and put in a Philips DVDR824 I wasn't using anymore.

I had to remove the front.

The tray front of the old fitted on the new so from the outside no-one can tell the difference.

Problem solved.

Playing like new.
