I am experiencing a similar error to this topic, only I have a SATA recorder, and I've already checked that the cable is properly seated. I can also write off any error with the drive's laser, as I get this error about 20% into recording in test mode. (Oh, and the drive records fine from a Linux USB stick booted on the same machine.)

It may or may not make a difference that the SATA interface is set to IDE compatibility mode, and I don't really want to switch over to AHCI to test that, since it would require a repair installation over Windows XP to get it booting again.

Then you should look for the latest driver for your SATA controller. It might also be worth trying the burner on all the available SATA ports.
