Can't change default write speed below 4x

I am using Image burn 2.5.0 to burn .iso files to either Verbatim Datalifeplus part number 94854 8x DVD-R discs or Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R Discs. I have a Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-7240S burner and an Asus P5K-E Motherboard and Intel E8400 CPU with 2gb of RAM. Either of these discs are supposed to have a minimum write speed of 1x. Whenever I use imageburn to burn a disc it scans either disc and reports that the default (slowest) writing speed is 4x. I try to set it slower but 4x is as slow as it will let me go. Even if I choose 1x or 2x it states in the log that the write speeds are mismatched and continues to write at 4x. Since all I have ever used are DVD-R discs what am I doing wrong?? The issue is that Optiarc decided that the firmware/burner shouldn't support any lower write speeds than 4x for that media code.

 

There is also a 1.03 version of the firmware for that drive.

Why is it so important to burn at 1x or 2x?

Burning at the slowest speed doesn't necessarily result in a better burn quality, especially on a new burner like yours that's tuned for faster burns. You might get better burns at 8x.

Additionally, the line quoted from your log shows what speeds your current firmware uses for your choice of media.
