Burning xbox 360 games, error message!! argh!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi guys, i have recently started burning xbox 360 games using my laptop (HP dv1299ea), the burner is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20L and verbatim dvd+r dl discs

I am burning downloaded games, but only half the games i download actually burn to disc and work, i dont think its the files themselves which is the problem rather something else. Im hesitant to try the same files multiple times as the dics are pretty expensive! the games that dont burn properly get an error message right at the start of burning (before 1%) but still seems to render the disc useless

log file from last unsuccessful burn:

Sounds as your burner doesn't like the media code on those discs.

Have you tried the other speeds - 4x, 6x?

Have you tried the other speeds - 4x, 6x?

i thought that burning at a lower speed would give it a higher chance of being sucessful??

edit - just tried burning one at 4x and got a different error message:

Ok so basically the drive is just failing to burn DL discs in general?!

If cleaning it doesn't work, get yourself a new one.

Slimline drives are usually pretty rubbish so get a full size external.

any idea how much external burners cost, and what a fairly decent one would be on a low budget?

Depending on where you are, there are links at the bottom of the post.

would this set up work?

pioneer 111d second hand) - e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330395963149&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

would this set up work just as well as a proper external burner? anything else i would need to make it work???

Not sure I'd ever really trust a 2nd hand drive to be honest... but maybe that's just me.

You'd be better off with a proper enclosure. That cable provides no way of actually powering the burner.

seeing as im a pretty broke student i think im gona go for a second hand one if possible...

are the closures specific for each model of burner? like would i have to buy a pioneer 111d specific enclosure? or are they universal? what a re some search terms i could use on ebay?

thanks for the help!

edit: wouldnt that cable power the burner via the USB port? (sorry im not very computer savvy!)

They should be universal, you'll just have to get one with the right interface.

i.e. if you buy an IDE drive you'll need one that's USB/eSATA to IDE.

If you buy an SATA drive you'll need one that's USB/eSATA to SATA.

Should be pretty obvious really ;)

New drives are about £20 so don't go crazy on the eBay bids for 2nd hand ones!

what are some recommended drives for ~£20? i've heard panasonic and lite on drives are the best..

EDIT: found this drive - http://www.datakits.co.uk/store/liteon-lh20a1p12c-ram-oem-20x-dual-layer-dl-dvd%C2%B1rw-internal-p-2031.html?utm_campaign=export_feed&utm_medium=cse&utm_source=googlebase&m1track=googlebase&language=en#googlebase

says it can burn DL discs etc - £16.99 do you think this drive would be capable? Because the drive in my laptop supposedly burns DL discs but half the time it doesnt work!!

Its says its an IDE interface so i would need a USB/eSATA to IDE external enclosure - cant seem to find one anywhere! only thing i can find is external hard drive enclosures :(

I'd get an Optiarc AD-7240S and a nice cheap external enclosure that has SATA interface inside ;)

Just found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170431395289&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

its an external liteon 20x DVD+/-R DL drive, doesnt have a model number or anything but does it look like it would be decent enough to burn xbox 360 games well?

edit: going by the picture on the box http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=28&Itemid=85 i think its this drive: http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=191&Itemid=85

does it look good enough?
