glassman Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Hi. I have read here that imgburn automatically finalizes the dvd, but it still won't play in my Panasonic. It plays in 2 computers and 3 other dvd players. I get the 'unsupported' message in the Panasonic. I am burning pictures from 'my pictures' to a dvd, the object is being able to show them on my 40 inch tv, instead of having guests go to my office and watch them on a 22 inch screen. I am using Windows 7. They have a burning program, but it states:'it will close the dvd, but not finalize it. you will need another program to do that', so I assumed that imgburn would work, but no love. Am I missing something here? Might as well be upfront about it, I'm not anywhere near as smart as a fifth grader when it comes to computers. Appreciate any help. Sorry, I forgot. //****************************************\\ ; ImgBurn Version 2.5.1.0 - Log ; Monday, 29 March 2010, 23:39:38 ; \\****************************************// ; ; I 14:12:02 ImgBurn Version 2.5.1.0 started! glassman Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 (edited) And the Panasonic can play those files according to its specifications? I went back and read the manual over again. I think I might be an idiot, please help me verify this:-) The discs it will play are; dvd-ram, dvd-r (what I used), dvd-r dl, dvd-rw, +r, +r dl, +rw. In addition to this, it will do play back only for; dvd-video, dvd-audio, dvd-rw(dvd video recording format), audio cd, video cd. However, they also list what it will not play back (which I just found). Among these are; 3.95/4.7 gb dvd-r for authoring (oh oh!) dvd-r recorded in video recording format. The Panasonic also has a slot to accept sd cards, and i'm beginning to think this is how I used to play pics to the tv through it. It's been quite a while since I did it, so I guess I forgot about this (mea culpa!) This next bit confuses me though: If I'm reading it right, it says it will play a finalized cd with pictures on it, because under 'audio cd', it says ' still pictures (jpeg and tiff) recorded on cd-r/rw). When I continue down the list of what it won't play, it mentions 'photo cd"?? To my little mind, "photo cd' and a cd that can record jpegs would be the same thing. I'm guessing they are different somehow but I really don't understand this. so, to summarize: 1) Am I correct in thinking that it won't play back a dvd-r authored in a computer because it says "dvd-r for authoring' in the 'no can do' list? If this is correct, does that tell me it would accept dvd+r?? I don't see any specific prohibition against that anywhere. Of course I will run out and buy some +r's to try it, I just wanted to try to understand it. 2) What is the difference between a 'picture cd' and a cd that will record jpegs? Is there a difference? ianymaty Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Read this Tutorial about DVD recordable formats. Read this Info about Photo CD and Picture CD A CD containing pictures or photos in .jpg, .jpeg, .bmp, .tiff or ather formats is just a simple Data disc with those files on it. From what you provided it seams that it will play just some standard disc like DVD Video, DVD Audio, Video CD, Audio CD. It is not mentioned about any file format like .avi, .mkv, .vmw, .vma, .mpg, .mp3, .jpeg and many other file formats that can be on the discs (DVD-R, +R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW) that it can read/play. Also it may support the files only on CD. So try with a CD not with DVD.

It's just hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that 3 other dvd players, 2 that are 'cheapies' and one more expensive one, and 2 computers all accept the recording without a problem. I'll be the first to admit I don't understand this stuff and I'm sure that's what is making it so frustrating. I guess because I paid a lot for the Panasonic, I expect it to do a lot, and it isn't doing what a couple of $80 players can do. The whole purpose of recording to dvd was that I have about 20gb of photos to transfer. So instead of 5 dvd's I'll have to use 25 cd's. Very annoying. I think I'll just avoid Panasonic in the future, for everything. I'll try the cd route, hopefully that will work at least.
ianymaty Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 No, you not have to avoid Panasonic or any other big company. They do that trying to be honest on the market and stay away from the gray side. U have to addmit that alot of audio/video computer type files are some sort of rips from original copyrighted material. The big companies first avoid the law infringement by not adding support to those files, while the little companies gain profit from this delay and make boxes that support virtualy any kind of files. Eventualy they add support for files when they see that little companies make profit while they loose and the law not punish them for adding support to any kind of files. And yes, the NAME makes the price even if the product is less versatile. Next time probably you will do a research before buying some product with a NAME on it. Good Luck!
